So i gather that you lot hate this trilogy because its more idea-focused than person-focused

Thing is, thats exactly the kind of autism I need. Is it really so bad?

Preemptive frick off if you're just gonna shit on it without justification.

Those who agree, what else is like this?

somehow, i figured not even a preemptive frick off would help

I liked it because of that as well, it felt like an older sci-fi, it's the same reason I couldn't watch the show because it focused too much on relationships and them being just a big group of freinds

Is this big pile of poo good as reading practice for somebody learning the language? Where could I find a version specifically in Trad?

    >So i gather that you lot hate this trilogy
I've seen many threads about this book and most anons seem to like it. The consensus is that it's not until the 2nd book that it goes to shit.

      >2nd book it all goes to shit

Why does this happen with so many sci-fi series?

It's not that it went to shit in the 2nd. It was already shit, and it got worse.

Genuinely don't understand the love for this series. It reeks of 1st year university students suddenly aparently knowing everything. Oh wow guys the Dark Forest idea is so scary. Honestly depressing most people go through their lives questioning nothing.

the 2nd book is the only good thing.
the first and third book suck

They're wrong. The 2nd book is marginally worse than the first initially. Then it take off after a timeskip. The 3rd book is fantastic, however.

    >Is it really so bad?
It's not bad because it's story focused, or idea focused, or character focused. It's bad because it's written really badly. The plot is all over the place with bullshit deus ex machina at the end of each. The dialogue is so fricking bad, Ayn Rand would blush. Expository polemic rants, rather than conversations. And that's when they don't contradict themselves. Scientific ideas so twisted you're glad Li doesn't work in a power station any more. Footnotes from the author to show how much he apparently knows, never mind if their use was justified in any literary sense. Footnotes from the translators because the author forgets to explain shit. Sometimes several similies or metaphors in the same paragraph because the author couldn't decided.

God I hate that I gave Dark Forest a chance after I hated 3 Body. But I had the set. Into the garbage they went.

It is unbievable how well liked this series is, I can only conclude mass brain damage. Go give it a read and report back, I'm actually interested if being autistic is the key to enjoying this shit.

Post-WW2 science fiction outside of narrow cosmists genre scope is mass market popsci trash in the hands of Boomers that flooded it. Late 19th to early 20th is where its at, speculatively, fantasy or otherwise. It's just not a morass worth wading into for the gems.

I like it a lot so far.
Reminds me a bit of Windup Girl but maybe that's just because of the asian names.

I found the asian names so confusing, but the story made up for that. The 2nd book did take a bit to find its feet, but eventually it and the 3rd were pretty great, like the 1st

Read the first and second book. First seems like a prequel more than anything. Second was very good. I'm waiting for the library to give me the third

I liked it. The nihilism wore a little thin.

The ideas are kinda weak imo, there's nothing there that's not been done before. Try Accelerando by Charles Stross if you want autism.
