You can just download VRChat from Steam, VR hardware NOT required.

Way better than the shitty Meta Horizon Worlds that Zuck tries to push.

The metaverse strategy of Zuck is something I will never fully understand. I mean sure they wanted a plattform where they controlled the hardware to access it but did he really think that this would somehow work out, let alone in the way they implemented and advertised it (see OP picrel).

Will it though...Meta treats the app developers on their platform like absolute dogshit, i can't imagine how enticed those OEMs are by the idea of trying to compete with subsidized hardware and using an OS under Meta's complete control. Meta has proven to be a pretty tyrannical 'custodian' with their platform compared to Apple or Google.

Any platform owner treats their peasants like cattle, DeoVR was a recent example.

Yes, but you're supposed to do this *after* everyone is dependent on your platform, not before when you're trying to entice them. Apple just allowed a 3rd party netflix app on the vision pro platform that is not made by Aopple nor Netflix ( https://www.roadtovr.com/netflix-vision-pro-app-supercut/ ).

They know how to grow a platform properly, while Meta has a history of going mental over even the slightest hint at direct competition. They tried to bury Virtual Desktop in the early days just because their own link app wasn't ready and was crappier

Meraverse is literally just a shitty app put together in 3 days at most.
It's purpose is guarding the patents they have for the AR glasses, moron.
It's like that online rpg game multiplayer that nobody plays but is still being maintained serverwise to keep access to the IP. Normally, patents expire, but if you have a service like this running, they don't expire for the lifetime of the service being run

fortnite is unironically the only proper metaverse in existence. even roblox could be considered one. they just arent VR. fortnite has had countless brand collaborations, concerts from large artists that people watched together in real time, movie premieres, it has a social chat mode, building mode, free roam mode, etc.

yes but not very much i got bored quickly using it. i agree with

As an SL player, it’s too behind the times and the remaining audience doesn’t follow that type of internet culture anymore. It has the most potential of any of them by far, with little to no content restrictions, a proper content rating and separation system, and 20 years of world under its belt. But people don’t treat it like the virtual world they did in 2008 or whenever, it’s all there but it’s empty, people generally stick around a few major locations.
It’s still cool. You can go to virtual clubs with 70 other people, virtual shopping malls, big ass social locations to just stand around and shitpost. But you’ll rarely just wander into anyone or anything notable roaming that massive world.

it has potential but seems difficult to navigate. theres some cool stuff going on in SL like live music events but its in small communities, not so much a public thing you can easily find.

Like Roblox has individual games which at peak hours will pull 1 million active users. Individual games, 1m users.
For context when I was a kid and joined Roblox in 2008 there were slightly over 1 million registered accounts in total, and now a single game can pull more active users than there were once registered accounts.

SL at peak hours across the entire game usually has 40-70k users, it varies a lot day to day depending on events and bot presence. But it’s comparatively nothing. Roblox is seeing 100m+ at any given time.
If anything is pulling off the metaverse concept right now it’s Roblox, it’s just happenstance that it’s a more child oriented platform so the irl influences presented in it are usually pretty tame.

I think where Zuck is faltering here is in trying to keep their virtual world very tame.
Who the frick wants to roleplay real life or integrate real life into a virtual world? I want to pound furry femboys and Meta is not capable of that because their fabricated culture is basically office cubicles in vr.

I kinda want a vr headset to use as a simple "virtual desktop" to use while lying down in bed instead of the monitor arm+laptop dock I currently have but it doesn't seem like it's quite there yet.

this is why Apple's VR is gonna eventually do well. People who have the money are gonna buy it because you don't have to hold it and tilt your head down like a tablet and you get a way bigger display than any monitor. Once the stigma/weirdness of wearing a VR headset goes away it's going to become very popular.
