      >As this pursuit was ongoing, an unnamed tribune (upon realising their position at the exposed rear of the Macedonian right wing) detached 20 maniples (approximately 2,500 infantry combined) and sent them into the rear of the Macedonian phalanx.[4][7][8][9][15] Being quickly cut down due to the inflexibility of the formation, the Macedonian phalanx disintegrated. Some were simply killed where they stood, others pointed their sarissas directly upwards in a sign of surrender that the Romans either ignored or failed to understand. Thus, the slaughter continued, only being stopped due to the intervention of Flamininus.[4]

The reason they did well was because they were trained as professional soldiers and how to fight in formation.
Most armies at the time were just called up among the local population and we mostly just brawlers once the two sides met.
Its why the spartans were such an effective army, they trained in formation and were able to take commands and pivot quicker than the other armies.
Every time that happens in warfare, one side being able to move and command their side faster than the other guy, they win. Its why napoleon broke the meta for a few hundred years because his command on the battlefield was so lightning fast it made everyone else seem to be standing still.

This is what won Edward Longshanks the battle of Falkirk. Wallace's victory at Stirling was a fluke and also wieneryness of the English.

Falkirk showed William was an idiot. Infantry in circled spear fornation with archers in between. Archers butchered like dogs by the English knights. Knights retreat when they can't break through the soear formation.

Longshanks orders longbows and annihilates the scottish men in literal droves as they only had spears and no way to counter the longbows. It was so bad some scots picked up rocks to throw in vain at the archers to stop them.

The Scots mostly died stuck in formation and Wallace fled like a coward. No wonder the Scots sold him out to the English, getting so many killed from moronic strategy and tactics.

And its not like every arrow launched is going to hit someone, and those that hit aren't going to be a guaranteed kill. Not to mention arrows are expensive and time consuming to make, and the reality is that you weren't seeing massive volleys of arrows like the movies.

          Anonymous

Less expensive than losing thousands of pikemen in a frontal attack i imagine. Hell you don't need to kill everyone, just a few dead random pikemen in the back being unable to advance because of the dude in front being fricking dead will break formation eventually.

They had shields and armor, and moved quickly enough that you wouldn't be able to shoot at them for long before being overrun. At worst they managed a quick walk. At best, and period sources back this up, Alexander's phalanx could run without losing cohesion.

How many arrows can you loose before a bunch of fit, angry men cover 200 yards of open terrain? Not enough.

This twitter/reddit meme bleed over is especially embarassing to see on IQfy. Yes twitter/reddit garbage gets overflowed onto IQfy all the time, but this bullshit should have already been processed by someone on IQfy back in at least fricking 2004, if they actually played motherfricking video games

We live in a time where magic sticks shoot instant death, of course nobody is gonna know how to counter the most braindead medieval strategies anymore.

This. Nobody should think the phalanx was the entire army, the phalanx was the central force element.

A light infantryman would be accompanied by two twinks who would carry his shit, and preparing for battle the twinks would become auxiliary elements who effectively hid behind the phalanx and protected the flank and baggage caravan.

If your army lost its baggage, it starved to death or limped home eating grass. Someone you were about to invade would totally send skirmishers on a suicide mission to destroy your baggage caravan in order to halt your army.

frontline was the most experienced fighters. you’d be in the back so you can’t frick things up.

Wrong, look up Roman battle tactics. The front was usually filled with the less-experienced troops, likely due to seniority rules allowing the more experienced troops to choose the backline for their own protection or because they wanted newer soldiers to get some combat experience as well.

Why don't modern military commanders just set up a long line of tanks and just tell them to "just keep pushing forwards and keep spaming your ammo as you drive forwards at whatever is infront of you"

I believe the phalanx was superior mostly from a military planning point of view. It was an actual army.

They outmatched militia, outmarched men at arms, out numbered skirmishers.
If a phalanx is marching on your city state settlement, what's your response?
You've got 5 men at arms who are functionally your police. You levy 30 local men as a militia, you send 10 skirmishers ahead to try and disrupt the phalanx marching on you. Then what? You're fricked.
By the time the phalanx had assembled its too late for anyone nearby to muster the forces to repel it.

Why didn't they make extremely powerful weapons that required 2-3 people to use? Like imagine a gigantic rock tied to a string swung by these three guys, or a huge sword, something like that. That could take out multiple people at once.

Also you had to be physically strong to be of any use so basically only farmers fought.

Low IQ question here, but I don't get pre-gun powder battle formations. The dudes in the back are literally just standing there, doing nothing. Isn't it a better idea to stretch them out and only have a formation that is maybe four rows deep?

I guess they're acting as a reserve or moral support to the guys in front. If part of the front line breaks you have guys right there to fill it in, whereas if they were spread out in a long thin line you would need to keep a second long thin line behind them to respond to parts where it's failing so you may as well keep them all together.
