at the risk of seeming obtuse: the joke is that reading Famous Naval Battles is no more productive than watching politics youtubers. neither hobby builds character, community ties, or political movements. it's all masturbatory. it's simply more sustainable to delude yourself into thinking otherwise with "mature" media like history books.

reading is a much less passive activity than listening to some guy tell you the same thing. the act of reading, as discreet as it has become, is still a monumental process that has a higher "lowest common denominator" in terms of metabolic requirements, let alone cognitive ones.
i will say, video media can be roughly as profitable given that the individual is highly focused on learning something from it, but generally speaking, much of youtube content (especially political ones) is usually less well edited than something like a serious nonfiction naval history book

        >youtube content (especially political ones) is usually less well edited than something like a serious nonfiction naval history book
even if this is the case, the mere act of reading doesn't produce anything. even a scrupulous, note-taking reader who only consumes diligently-written histories from university presses only accumulates another pile of paper. without a community of interlocutors, the intellect stagnates, social atomization progresses unheeded, and the ruling class stays in power. put simply: nothing happens.

I know you've developed the sunk-cost fallacy and have a neurotic need to justify your thousands of hours of social media usage but that's not how it works.

There’s a lot of things better said in respective media. Naval battles are better presented in video where you can show the geography and movements in ways books just can’t. Whatever love old farts have for strategic maps with arrows they struggle to convey dynamics that video can show in seconds. Likewise books are limited on illustrations and maps, having to choose a handful representatives due to cost constraints or layout constraints. The worst can’t even do them in line with the text.

Youtube politics might be shit, but the book equivalent wouldn’t be naval battles it would be books by Bill Oreilley and Rachel Maddow. Directionbrained brain rot.
        >b-b-but there are good books on politics!
And there are good videos on politics. You can find in depth interviews with analysts and politicians, in depth policy discussions directly from the groups and organizations that rule our fates. People just don’t watch that shit anymore than the serious politics books sell vs the LIBSHITS SUCK / NAZIS ARE KILLING US titles.

Most YT content is consumed by lonely morons and its left on in the background as they doom scroll. Anyone actually trying to learn is reading.

The comic is unintentionally showing that the guy is making the right choice. The brain is active during reading and he will improve his ability to read and write. These skills are much more applicable to the average person than buying a webcam and mic and trying to be your own vlogger.
