Although OP is being a bit alarmist, I do see a trend towards this direction.

Windows Defender has been "good enough" on its own for most cautious users, since when? Maybe about two or three generations of Windows

I remember the era of having to buy physical antivirus discs yearly to stay safe online. We may see a return to something similar but with ""cloud"" services; a lot of us average end users have gotten too comfortable with 1-click security solutions and maybe that's something that is being exploited for future quarterly uplines

      welcome Microsoft Defender

People don't use the OS (for the most part). They use the software that runs on the OS. You switch to whatever is able the newfangled software you want. Even decrepit ancient versions of windows mog linux in that regard.

It's a vicious circle between Windows and software built for the windows ecosystem.

In 2024 most productivity software supports linux or have somewhat usable alternative. Profesional graphic designers and engineers who need Adobe or Autodesk software use up to date versions of those on modern operating systems and NEET baby ducks who mumble about "muh photoshop" have no use case for it since they do not do anything productive in their life.

Most people would switch to Linux quicker if it didn't massively slow down when opening more than 3 tabs or have a better compatibility with most games.

It has no market share, no usage share, no cultural or tech impact. The ONLY thing that matters is the kernel and even that doesn't need to be developed anymore as Google has forked off into it's own kernel with ChromeOS and Android.

Name one thing that relies on distros really, servers couldn't care less about anything except for the kernel. They don't need fricking desktop environments or windows managers or proton. Not even steam deck relies on linux, they can just use windows like other handhelds. Consoles use windows. FreeBSD can be a foss alternative. Most banks and atms stil use embedded/iot windows. Most normalgays use windows or mac. Desktops are generally less relevant compared to phones. Google doesn't rely on anything except for the kernel. It's time to let the concepts of Distro die. Unironically. They are time wasted and a poor waste of dev resources. We could use those linux distro devs on other projects.

Unironically yes, better to have these less talented dudes at least contribute to doing the shitty boring parts no one likes. Obviously all the talented devs are at Google/Apple/Microsoft, but the linux pajeets can still contribute to simpler stuff and be cheap workhorses. Society would flourish from people not wasting their efforts on a dead end hobbyist idea. Nobody NEEDS a billion poorly thought out half assed options, we NEED one option that works as intended.

            >servers couldn't care less about anything except for the kernel.
You cant run a server with just a kernel. You need a full-fledged distro and people behind it to offer some kind of support. Without that, average cost of global infrastructure would raise significantly since everyone would have to pay for windows server license or use BSDs that have way worse software and hardware support. Needless to say that whole IoT market would become problematic to say the least.
            >Not even steam deck relies on linux, they can just use windows like other handhelds
And yet they have chosen to use Linux, so it does rely on it.

Satya himself knows that he can't mess with certain industries that rely entirely on windows and are really important for the global economy and supply chain (like cad, heavy industry, bioinformatics etc.), therefore there will always be a modern windows version made explicitly for local use on powerfull workstations. All you need is just learn how to pirate it.

Actually, microsoft no longer earns money from selling windows to normal people. They earn the most from their cloud services and better windows versions for companies.

I can see Windows embracing cloud environments for normies. You pay an Xbox Gamepass Ultimate subscription and you get access to a top tier PC blade server that can do everything faster than your local PC.

You're right, its more likely people are going to subscribe to use a 'computer' in the cloud than access strictly just an OS, its why intel are getting into gpus, its not just for gaymen its virtualization of desktops.

I could see it, but on the other side of the coin, Windows is already losing marketshare and has been since Windows 8. It's happening extremely slowly, but it is happening. This would likely just accelerate that, even normies are waking up to how they don't "own" software and media anymore unless they straight up steal it. Reasonable to assume a cloud OS would be met with similar hatred to 8. 10 is still a spyware zogslop OS but it IS a step up in usability for the average person compared to 8, and was slapped together just three years after 8's release. If there was enough blacklash history would repeat and Microsoft would push out a replacement, even if it would be another case of "Do you want full AIDS, or diet AIDS?"
