You hear about all these inventions and discoveries and then two, five, ten years later nothing changed. I think most of these "breakthroughs" are bunk and either aren't economical at scale or only worked under precise lab conditions and not in the real world. Stuff like that.

      For example?

I don't have anything specific in mind, but I've read about various new inventions over the years for cleaning pollution, space travel, exotic materials, computing etc. that never seemed to amount to much.
Some do, obviously, but a lot of these discoveries seem to fizzle out later.

I mean, you'd be able to be a little more specific with at least one example surely.

There was a device released years ago proclaiming to solve water shortages, but it turned out to be just a glorified dehumidifier.
That tesla tunnel thing in Las Vegas promised to revolutionise public transport but was plagued by traffic jams after the first week.

Well there was this armor concept called Dragon kind which was just the same ceramic/aramid composite made into little pucks and layered like scales. It was supposed to be as good as rifle plates but flexible, but nothing ever came of that.

The "breakthroughs" get the creators a wage slave job at some mega corp so they never do anything similar again and the tech gets pushed under the rug
