    I would assume something like XZ would be patched out within hours of the devs being aware of it, or even just fully taking out all changes done by the ""hacker"" in a second, since none of what he touched is functionally vital anyway.

      It was patched within hours of being discovered, but then they had to review the whole body of commits made by Jia Tan to ensure he didn't leave any other undiscovered issues. This "Jia Tan" guy got deeply embedded into the xz project as a co-maintainer, so they had to review two years worth of commits.

      From my understanding, .xz was reverted back to the version before Jia Tan started making commits as a stopgap. Now that they've reviewed everything in detail, a new version is coming forward.
