It's cheaper to give life sentences.

O believers! ˹The law of˺ retaliation is set for you in cases of murder—a free man for a free man, a slave for a slave, and a female for a female.1 But if the offender is pardoned by the victim’s guardian,2 then blood-money should be decided fairly3 and payment should be made courteously. This is a concession and a mercy from your Lord. But whoever transgresses after that will suffer a painful punishment.

And there is life for you in retaliation, O men of understanding, that ye may ward off (evil).

seeing an execution in public is pretty fricked. there's also the reality that in the case of Saudi Arabia their justice system is hilariously fricked up and ineffective.

It's only that cheap if you don't care about executing innocent people. The process takes years because they can't undo executing someone.

It's cheaper to give life sentences.

          >even executing obvious profligate scum like someone who shot up a Walmart or did a home invasion killing the family takes years, are delayed by endless appeals and such to extract wealth
          >this is long drawn out process is to protect the innocent
          >we shouldn't execute those who have clearly demonstrated their inhumanity and unwillingness to cooperate
          >they should instead be subsidized their lives in perpetuity to benefit, who?

          Liberal moronation.

Why not just put murderers to hard labor?

This could work, I'd advocate sending out criminal and homeless scum to an American gulag in Alaska or Wyoming. New penal colonies.

Some people are much more obviously guilty than others, but people are given equal opportunity under the law to prevent mistakes from being made. Obviously, the system is flawed, but but its better than being able to rush the process, because people will 100% abuse that system.

Also, I don't really see how spending years and years with your demise staring you in the face is a benefit. Death row is a miserable place where you're surrounded by the worst of humanity who have nothing to lose. Prison cells are specifically built to make it nearly impossible to commit suicide. If anything, it's a worse punishment than death. I can see not wanting to waste money to keep them around and I also consider life imprisonment as sort of pointless since you've basically already taken the criminals life from them, but I also want a government that has as little of an ability to decide who lives and who dies as possible. Obviously the government is going to sometimes kill people as force is ultimately what gives it its authority and sometimes it cannot be helped, but I don't trust fallible humans with that sort of power.

US law enshrines four separate purposes of criminal punishment:
    >Deterrence
    >Incapacitation
    >Just punishment
    >Rehabilitation
I assume that other countries have similar justifications.

When you are defending yourself against a criminal who wants to kill you, you have the right to shoot them. However, if the criminal manages to kill you, the maximum penalty they can receive is life in prison. It seems like the situation for the criminal improves after a murder.

Actually, given that something like 95% of crime is by repeat offenders, the death penalty does actually deter crime because it prevents the dude who committed three rapes from committing ten more.

I'm in favour of the death penalty but it shouldn't stop there. If you are convicted of a violent crime you should be sterilised.
