It was from the Jean-Louis Gassée era, the guy who went on to create BeOS and the BeBox.

i recently started learning more about computing history, and apparently NeXT was responsible for a ton of stuff that modern computers still do

when Apple bought out NeXT they based their newest version of macos on the next os.
you can trace all personal computers back to Apple, they straight up invented the personal computer and every gui-driven OS owes everything to Steve Jobs and the original macintosh

The Mac pushed graphical interfaces to the mainstream, but it was not the first to hit the market.

NeXT was the most advanced operating system to ever ship as more than just a research OS.

If crashing all the goddamn time is peak sovl, sure. is only half wrong. OS 10 was the best thing to happen because it fixed and brought forward more than it broke. Too bad it only got worse after that.

You're not wrong but every computer but UNIX/Linux crashed in that time.

Frick the Quadra, gimme that aircraft carrier of a keyboard and its full complement of Alps switches.
The mouse is ass, though. The previous 'wedge' mouse was much better.

Apple has never made a single decent mouse during its entire existence despite popularizing the damn concept. Why?

Original macintosh ad: It has only one button so you don't get confused.

Is that keyboard really that good? I have one sitting in a closet somewhere.

Most if not all ancient keyboards like those are godly

maybe they wanted their users to focus on keyboard commands rather than pointing and clicking.

Nonsense. The Mac's original keyboard didn't even have arrows or function keys because Steve Jobs wanted people to use the mouse for everything.

at that time, apple was divided internally between the apple II team and the macintosh team. jobs tried and failed to foment division between them and was part of the reason he was kicked out. it's also one of the reasons the original macintosh was a failure.
