Inflated budgets aren't going to be matched with promotion spending. Fast X was said to need 800 mill to break even with a 379 mill budget. They also claimed they broke even at their 715 mill box office. My guess is it'll need 750 mill with a scaled-back marketing. Black panther 2 made 860 mill, they aren't going to dump money on marketing when they know it's not gonna come close to that.

            https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2024/04/14/disneys-star-wars-box-office-profits-fail-to-cover-cost-of-lucasfilm/
            Here's the article.

The author only considered the films and the D+ shows, seeing that those have only made Disney about 1.2 billion (this is pure profit, after all expenses are considered). This is 2.8 billion short of the 4 that they spent on Lucasfilm.

I'm not a financial expert, I'll leave the article with you guys and see if someone else has some real insight, but my gut tells me that the merch that has pitifully underperformed and the vidya that failed to make any cultural impact did not fill the 2.8 billion gap. Toys can be handwaved as costing nothing to inject plastic into a mold, but vidya costs money to produce.

            Anonymous

            >vidya costs money to produce.
Disney likely didn't spend a single penny of their own money to make the game(s). EA almost certainly paid them money to use the Star Wars name and then paid the entire development costs.

I hate how the "hurr durr write it off" meme has become a thing. If it was that advantageous to just eat production costs and declare a loss then every time a film tracked like it was DOA they'd just shelve it. That's a nuclear option that only happens in the case of something like Batgirl where it's less about getting some huge fiscal advantage than the studio being in complete turmoil and just not wanting to spend another cent on something. It's a last resort.

        Anonymous

I believe there are cases where shelving it will actually save them money, I remember it happening once or twice for that explicit reason. I think it was streaming related though.

          Anonymous

Well yeah suspending production or marketing always saves money in the sense that you literally just stop spending money on it. And if you don't stream a show you don't have to pay royalties.

But again, these are just "stop the bleeding" measures where you admit the thing is a complete fricking waster and it's not worth wasting any more assets on. Saving money by not digging a deeper hole isn't the necessarily same as recouping what's already in the hole, though. Yes, you can use the losses to offset tax liability to some extent but you can only lose less, not actually make more. The revenue still needs to come from somewhere else because you need liability to offset. It can't just be write-offs all the way down

            Anonymous

            >but you can only lose less
Which is acceptable if you look at it as a payment or investment on their end. I 100% believe a lot of these decisions have been made to either destroy beloved franchises out of spite and/or to socially engineer the populous via hollywood culture.

            Anonymous

An investment that generates 0% profit is not acceptable. And hollywood is in the social engineering business for sure but you're not having much influence over anyone by making a product literally no one ever sees.

It's good to be skeptical of a blatantly corrupt industry but a major production just going into mothballs forever isn't 57D chess, it's just a disaster. Which is why this turd's getting shit out one way or another. It will fail spectacularly but it *will* get released

It's not just the test screening you had a writer strike happen during the recuts, you had delays that put this movie way out of sync with whatever plan you had originally which means rewrites, you had other marvel movies failing so more rewrites as to not lean on that since their original shit was around people seeing the eternals and antman, you had real world shit happen which means rewrites and then ontop of that your main villain Kang might be going to fricking prison so you rewrite rewrite rewrite

    This was already debunked
    >Despite reports of multiple reshoots on the movie, so far this is the only one. It does not appear to be as extensive as the reshoots that faced Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which lasted six weeks, nor the expensive and extensive reshoots endured by The Marvels. In fact, one insider says Brave New World will cost significantly less than The Marvels overall.

I can't remember if it was this movie or another, but it supposedly ended not with a climatic battle but with an actual fricking discussion between the good and bad guys.

then they were scrpabooking the reshoots just filming action scenes with no rhyme or reason and were going to write the dialogue/exposition/plot scenes to interconnect the action AFTER they were done filming the action scenes.

The problem is that Disney is too big to fail anymore.

On top of which, they have the parks which while down, are still making a profit and will always do so because there's a disconnect between the parks and what the media side is doing.

I think Victoria Alonso had her hands in this before being fired and everything she worked on was a disaster.

Bucky should have been cap and him and Falcon should have had a trilogy. It's not even a racial thing, Bucky just makes more sense to take over. Same serum. Metal arm. Falcon already has an iron man suit now so a shield seems pointless. We could have had 3 buddy cop kinos with them but no of course we can't have that

Good post. They just did what they always do. Falcon went from third string to fricking franchise headliner without earning it. Just a diversity promotion. Bucky has been there since the fricking what fourth movie in the franchise? Falcon would be accepted if they'd just built him up properly. Surprisingly, I think what's killing the movies is the TV series, they're aren't building up characters the right way in the movies because they think they can just do it on Disney+ instead. Moviegoers had no fricking clue who Kamala Khan is.

So if they're going to bring him in why not do it right and give him an origin film even if it's on D+ and actually keep to his origin and look. Why is he now a gay zoomer barista? The culture wars bullshit? They really need to "fix" Skaar to teach the racist misogynist twitter c**ts a lesson. I worked at a non profit that relied on old donors. We had to constantly go out of our way for them, take them to parties, call them weekly to larp as friends etc and these old people were nasty as frick constantly reminding us they have the money and getting mad if we miss a day. A boomer that has a lot of wealth is paranoid and also demands moronic things for anyone trying to take a cut of that because it's a representation of all they accomplished in their life. Friendly reminder that Top Gun Maverick was in development hell for 30+ years, had some of the most detailed and realistic CG in cinema, a stacked cast, and had an elaborate utilization of PFX with real F18s that required all of the major actors to be trained to fly them which resulted in over 800 hours of footage being filmed for the movie(roughly 60% of the film used for the production of the entire LoTR trilogy and I believe the most for an individual film), and still had a production budget of roughly 170-180 mil; cheaper than any high-budget Disney slop released over the past decade.
It's very obvious to me just as an outsider that Disney's production wing is entirely corrupt and in it for themselves. There's no other logical explanation some Indian CGI shitfest like this should cost more than the GDP of Palau.

I find it bizarre because Africa is literally the weakest consumer market on earth, that also happens to largely gravitate towards it's own film industries; making it a double no-no for Hollywood to focus on from a financial standpoint.
Nigeria, a nation of 230 million people(more than Brazil), has a lower household final consumption expenditure than Switzerland; while also having the most robust and loyal domestic film industry of anywhere in the world outside of India.

I think it's more complicated than that.
You had COVID, which locked China down far longer than anywhere else; and you also had a bunch of failed Hollywood attempts to break into China's market that ocurred in tandem with China's film industry kicking into gear.
And then you had Hollywood writing off China as a market when TGM and Spider-Man overperformed, which has resulted in Hollywood making the reverse mistake of completely writing off markets outside of Europe and LatAm.

The more I see of Marvel post Endgame the more I think Perlmutter was the real reason the MCU succeeded and not Feige. He wouldn't stand for multiple reshoots, just scrapping Daredevil over halfway in and starting again and I know he would've let Blade languish in development hell

gonna have to say yes because Perlmutter had some semblance of a brain of how to make TV content on ABC/Netflix partnering and still not overstep or overexpose like the current crop of Disney+ tv shows are doing to the brand

Shame Perlmutter got kicked out because he donated to Trump because i agree Marvel was better managed under him.

I know there is at least 1 cut that includes the black Super Soldier that whined about how he got treated like shit in Vietnam helping them save the day.

Falcon and the winter soldier was a fever dream. One scene you have Falcon denied a loan with the assumption that it's cause he is black. Him and Bucky cross a random Detroit street and cop cars peel out for no reason pointing their guns at Falcon demanding he goes to the ground again because he's black.

      Anonymous

At the time the comics did this, it was already tone deaf because we had a black president for years already, a black person in every position of power you could think of, and our top celebrities and musicians were all black.
Then they waited 6 years and did it in the MCU, which was even LESS plagued by race issues than the real world, but somehow we're to expect the same people who hailed war machine as Iron Patriot suddenly had a problem with a black captain america.

Not to mention the MCU cap had almost NO legacy without falcon. He gets thawed out, fights in new york, then immediately gets paired with falcon.

If they wanted to do this plot, they would have needed to have steve go on tons of solo adventures, or have bucky return as steve's regular partner before he left.

If you are going to have a character that stole or didn't invent the tech they are using they have to be interesting. Scott Lang is similar and he is an interesting charismatic character. Falcon is not. Never has been. He is boring. The only thing that made him interesting in the comics is he literally could control birds like a bird aquaman and they took that away from him

            >IM 2 - Seen as one of the worst Marvel movies because of the uninteresting bad guy who at the end yet again just becomes evil Iron Man
            >IM 3 - whole Mandarin debacle
Killian was somewhat interesting although they really raped the Extremis plot line and made it paper thin. I think his villains were bad BUT to be fair this is a constant issue with the MCU

            Anonymous

Mandarin could've been fantastic if they just played it straight. Ben has the chops for it, and the promo material for the fake Mandarin just has shades of what could've been.
Killian was kind of whatever. Obadiah remains the best one but it's mostly thanks to the performance. Although Justin Hammer isn't too bad either.

            Anonymous

Killian made the most sense which is why I thought he was ok. Basic story plot of guy that gets rejected by charismatic playboy and vows to destroy his life. I too wish Justin Hammer was a bigger player in the MCU. What a waste great actor and interesting character.

No they wouldn't. I never got this revisionism with people saying Iron Man was a nobody. He had a cartoon during Marvle's previous heyday and aired alongside Hulk. He certainly wasn't Spider-man, but he was easily top ten Marvel, probably top five if you count the Fantastic Four as one.

The ESG money is in the form of zero interest loans (with ip as the collateral), which directly generates at least the production budget as immediate revenue. Which means the films automatically profit. The “downside” to this model is steadily increasing debt, but as long as they keep getting loans they can keep paying them off. The only time this model slips up is when the generation of assets slows down enough that payments have to be missed, which is what happened with worldcom.

    >loan the amount you have to repay cancels out the gain in assets

Again, worldcom did this. They were doing great until they ran into delays on laying lines due to government mandated monopolies, and it was one of the biggest financial scandals in history simply because payments came due and worldcom hadn’t generated enough assets to leverage to pay them.

This is also why “production budgets” keep getting higher and higher. Not to mention they also get some actual revenue from box office and streaming.

It’s illegal to pay a credit card with a credit card. You can get a debt consolidation loan, but that’s its own thing. You can pay shit with cash advances from credit cards, but that’s also its own thing. There’s a frickton of regulation on the debt economy that’s in place to hopefully prevent another crash, but if you get ~~*creative*~~ enough, they can all be bypassed. To turn loans into revenue. To pay off loans with loans. To avoid extra interest on zero interest loans. Etc. Etc. Etc. That’s why we’re calling it money laundering. Because the source of the money has to be hidden. The loans go to shell companies, the shell companies hire other shell companies, the shells hire shells, the one of them is tax free, and it goes back to the studio as revenue.
