The two biggest issues atheists have to deal with is that there is still no known logical way to account for the origin of the universe in purely naturalistic terms, and also the fact that there appears to be at least one thing in the world which is non-physical i.e. consciousness.

The two biggest issues theists have to deal with is the apparent evil in the world seems to make the idea of an omnibenevolent entity existing more improbable and also the supposed divine hiddenness of God which seems inconsistent with the notion of a personal God involved in world affairs.

Yes I know each side claims to have solved these issues. But there is really no actual consensus.

This is why the question as to whether or not God exists is still an unanswered philosophical problem. Both sides run into paradoxes when asserting their arguments. Humans will never know unless we die and go to an afterlife.

    1. The Universe had no beginning, the Big Bang Theory is false.
    2. Consciousness being non-physical doesn't matter for being an atheist. All that matters is that one doesn't follow nor believe in the existence of, a Supreme Creator/ Sustainer deity, or otherwise follow ANY god..

Even if you go to an afterlife you can't be sure if what you're experiencing is the work of an ultimate God because that would require omniscience. So you can never confirm the existence of capital G God, only higher powers at best, just like you can't ever prove you're not a brain in a vat.

We don’t know what happened before the Big Bang for sure and maybe never will. Consciousness is electro-magnetism in the CNS

My solution is that there are two Gods, a pantheist and a deist.
The pantheist god is inherently flawed and strives for perfection. We were created so it may recognize its flaws and correct them, a universe observing itself. It loves a perfection it can never attain.
The deist god is exactly that, a deist god, a perfect non-interventionalist. But it loves the pantheist god and its efforts, and it constantly watches.
Both remember each iteration of Sisyphus that pushed the boulder up the hill and recognizes the effort. And both reward your contribution.
Live, learn, create, and teach to the best of your means. That is the path to salvation.

Atheists don’t have to believe in absolutes like causality and logic. This universe could be an anomaly with coincidental patterns which our brains adapted to in our course of evolution. But this doesn’t mean that absolutely everything in existence must have a cause. Problems go away when you stop making assumptions.

The universe has no origin and consciousness is an illusion. This shit was figured out a long time ago. You are correct that theists are still doing mental gymnastics trying to explain the problem of evil. Maybe they'll have an answer in another 2000 years.

That's a fair assessment, but I think there's a few other things worth mentioning. On the theist side, the issue of divine hiddenness is a fairly strong objection to specific theologies, but it doesn't have much of a bite against generic theism. On the atheist side, the problem of consciousness similarly puts pressure on the physicalist atheist, but it doesn't even tackle naturalism as a whole, let alone generic atheism.

    Wow
As a non-Abrahamic Theist I just realised that the afterlife probably exists because of the problem of evil
    It makes sense to me

    >account for the origin of the universe
    not my problem
    >one thing in the world which is non-physical i.e. consciousness
    false
'consciousness' is shaped by very physical brain development and can be altered by very physical surgery and drugs

          How?

          >account for the origin of the universe
          not my problem
          >one thing in the world which is non-physical i.e. consciousness
          false
'consciousness' is shaped by very physical brain development and can be altered by very physical surgery and drugs

          laid it out pretty straightforwardly.

Actually, the third and most difficult to account for thing for atheists are NDEs, as NDEs are unironically irrefutable proof that heaven really is awaiting us because (1) people see things during their NDEs when they are out of their bodies that they should not be able to under the assumption that the brain creates consciousness, and (2) anyone can have an NDE and everyone is convinced by it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U00ibBGZp7o

So any atheist would be too, so pic related is literally irrefutable proof of life after death. As one NDEr pointed out:

    >"I'm still trying to fit it in with this dream that I'm walking around in, in this world. The reality of the experience is undeniable. This world that we live in, this game that we play called life is almost a phantom in comparison to the reality of that."

If NDEs were hallucinations somehow then extreme atheists and neuroscientists who had them would maintain that they are indeed hallucinations. But what we find again and again is the opposite, since the deepest of NDEs convert them all.

      In your own words
Why are NDEs incompatible with materialism?

Yes there is. Big Bang Big Crunch cycles caused by the universe being a closed loop.

    >there is still no known logical way to account for the origin of the universe in purely naturalistic terms
    Why not?

    >there appears to be at least one thing in the world which is non-physical i.e. consciousness.
Why doesn't it appear to be physical?
