I, too, used to wish that things were secretly cooler than they actually are

Mathematics and hermetic magic used to occupy the same space. The only difference is math actually works. Most great mathematicians were active Christians (sometimes israelites) btw. Cantor considered his work something akin to worship. Math is inherently mystical but not in an exoteric way.

The term magic comes from the Ancient Persian magi. The Ancient Greeks thought that the mathematical abilities of the Ancient Persian priests (Magi) were otherworldly. Thus magic.

If you read ancient magic texts, you finally understand that magic is just how ancient people did what we call science today.

We simply haven't explored by example the technological tree of using sounds and frequencies as healing technology.

            kind of.

but have you seen the experiments where they use sound frequencies to change the structure of water?

i haven't, only seen cymatics shown in sand. i'm guessing it's the same for any oscillating wave through a medium

I think cymatics is the basics of a lot of ancient magical tech.

possibly, i'm pretty cautious about projecting modern ideas back like that, to me it's more likely there's a gap in our knowledge

the difference is that all these all just modifying external elements
    magic comes from within

can I cast a fireball just from my own inner mana?
    no

can I cast a fireball by using external elements?
    yes: rocket launcher, firethrower, etc.
