    >no! you don't understand! they're a/b testing an adblock circumvention!
They can test if their changes work against an adblocker inhouse. There's no reason to a/b test it like layout changes which people have opinions on, or adblock detection for warnings which they want to monitor feedback and test if if premium signups increase in regions they turn it on vs ones they don't.

      A/B testing doesn't exist

If this is true, then it really is over. There isn't going to be any way to block server side ad injection. Maybe with some kind of online service that's always listening to the video and checking the audio fingerprint of the ad in a database to know what ad it is and how many seconds to skip ahead, but that's a complicated and expensive solution that will probably require a monthly subscription to use, so at that point you might as well just pay for YouTube itself.

Honestly, pressing right arrow a few times to skip doesn't seem so bad.

If the ads are always in the beginning and Youtube sums the ad duration into the total video duration, you could do it with just a database of real video durations.
The client would just fetch the real video duration, calculate the difference and skip that many seconds ahead from the beginning.
Maybe I'm way off in my assumptions because I haven't seen ads in ages.

          Anonymous

Ads aren't the same for everyone. It's still going to be targeted advertising specifically for you, just injected into the stream on the server individually for every video played by every user. It will probably cost them like $100 million a year in extra cpu time, but I bet it will bring in more than that in ad revenue.

            Anonymous

Right, but if the real video is 60s long and you're served 67s of video, you'd immediately know to skip 7 seconds from the beginning.

            Anonymous

Ads aren't only played in the beginning though.

            Anonymous

            >It will probably cost them like $100 million a year in extra cpu time
Assumedly, they are encoding their ads to be at least the same codecs as their actual content, even if not the same quality.

If so, they should be able to just concatenate the video onto the end of the ad which would require practically no CPU power and would only require disk swap space for the video as it is being played before being discarded, assuming they aren't storing the result long term.

It will thrash storage however, every video they have has now gone from read intensive to incredibly write intensive which will probably kill disks much faster than before.
They could try to store the concatenated videos in memory, but i doubt they would ever be able to have enough capacity to actually do that.

        Anonymous

How about Sponsorblock but instead of the timestamps getting uploaded it uploads a fraction of audio/video right before the ad and right after the ad?
Then use content match to determine where to cut.

          Anonymous

How about zoomers watch their ads in their stupid brainless videos, more and more and more ads every day until they decide to move on? Because that's what's going to happen.

There's only a way around it because twitch still serves up 480p video without ads injected and ad blockers switch to that when they detect an ad is about to start. If they got rid of that loophole then there would be no way to block ads there anymore either.

The new ads seem to break the video player a lot of the time. Can't skip it, can't just hit right a few times. It's forced to play in its entirety.

I really don't know if I can go from being ad-free for almost 2 decades to suddenly having to sit through 2 minute ads for a 30 second video. Hoping the uBlock wizards figure this one out. The temporary fix they have only works on videos from your subscription page for some reason. Anything in a playlist or from a search will shove an ad in your face.

Newpipe is a b***h to configure or do anything with whatsoever. It is just fundamentally annoying and normies cannot use it in the same way as someone using grayjay or revanced could. Both of those options just work out of the box without any complicated set up. And I think grayjay will be the one that survives because you can do logins to shit on it unlike the other options. They already pre-planned for this kind of attempt.

more and more of the internet/tech is becoming so shit because people refuse to take even the smallest amount of time to change a few settings (same with normie gamers). but i also might have to acknowledge that most people are idiots and couldn't screw in a light bulb without being explicitly told how.

content blockers like ublock will never die unless the browser they're running in kills them. twitch did beat ublock, but twitch is mostly a livestreaming platform, while youtube is mostly a video archive. they pose different problems. also, youtube is significantly bigger than twitch, and basically everyone uses it, so the demand for ublock to work on it is far more extrreme
      >all browsers being chrome forks

          Anonymous

it does, but the engine and browser are actually their own thing. like you say, most browsers are just based on chromium under the hood, which uses blink. firefox (and its forks) use gecko. the entire tech stack is different, regardless of the funding, which is why it's important. other than safari (lol) which doesn't count, firefox and its forks are really the only truly "not google" browsers left

          >content blockers like ublock will never die unless the browser they're running in kills them
So what exactly is this V2 vs V3 controversy about them? How would you explain it to a tech illiterate?

manifest v3 is just a locking down of the browser. it limits what browser apis can do, amongst other things. the reason it is worrisome for content blockers is because it nerfs some of the browser apis that manifest v2 had, most importantly the ones related to ad blocking. basically, manfiest v3 is going to not let addons have as much power to block things, amongst other changes. mozilla has said it will still allow manifest v2 ad blocking capabilities last i checked, which was a while ago to be fair

now, how much manifest v3 nerfs ad blockers is still kind of up for debate, and it has been a clusterfrick since it was even first conceptualized, so who really knows what will happen

Manifest V3 = "the browser (Chromium) they're running in killing them"
you can use basically anything that isn't a Chromium reskin to fix this. if you can't give up Blink, Brave is patching it to keep Manifest V2 so use that.

doesn't the FTC require you to let users know it's an ad, can't ublock build a detection algorithm to find that notice and skip forward/block it

Install ublock origin Lite, which is now made for the V3 chromium asshomosexualry.

It slows down a bit the webpages compared to the main version, but it blocks all the ads, including youtube.

Google can try literally everything under the sky to destroy adblocking and they will only succeed temporarily. Only one dev among many has to figure out a new way to block ads and then it's simply a matter of automating the installation for the average pleb. The fact is, there's always enough people in this world who will never give in to ads and within that group there's enough devs to always figure out a way to block them no matter how moronic or difficult the solution.

They are a middle-man ad company, they not create ads, they just put ads of other people in Adsense, but what if they are reinvent themselves in an authentic marketing company, now Alphabet is a marketing agency AND control the distribution network.
They should close the Google brand and replace everything with Alphabet.

    >try to test it

Why the frick do the rabbis care if the public is getting "disinformed"? What are they afraid of? Why have they been pushing this shit so much recently? Is it the same shit as with
    >trust the ~~*experts*~~ and the ~~*good news sites*~~?

Are the elites genuinely scared that the public is going to revolt soon? Shit, I guess that's why the rich have been building super bunkers on those islands.

      >Why the frick do the rabbis care if the public is getting "disinformed"?
It started with the vaccines, they hold that people were getting covid because they weren't vaccinated because they were misinformed about them being dangerous.
When in reality... well, I guess we will never know because any information about vaccines killing people will get suppressed.
That's the problem of letting other people decide what's the "truth" and then anything against it is "misinformation."

Well yeah, that's the only reason they're still in power. If the average normalgay stopped to actually think about how much they're getting fricked in the ass and got access to information telling them how and why they're getting fricked in the ass the elites' heads would be off at dawn next morning. As long as they keep getting their slop and their news that everything is fine and to trust the authorities, the status quo can remain.

I remember when they managed to bypass ublock and insert ads between their thumbnails on the main page, and it took them like 16 hours to fix it.
To the point I HAD to watch ads about female higiene...
Because I like girls talking about their higiene so I clicked the ads.

I don't know if anyone else has figured this out but if you use a timestamp in the comments (or just comment your own) then it skips past the ads. It sometimes fricks up the seekbar but you can use picture-in-picture mode's seekbar instead.

      Anonymous

So the method to block ads now could be just appending the timestamp of 00:01 onto every video?

this skips mid-roll ads, not pre-roll ads

What if you use the embed url? I've noticed they don't do their bullshit on that one for some reason.

            Anonymous

supposedly they intentionally don't show ads on embeds because they don't want to risk exposing advertisers to sites they don't "approve" of (like here)

idk if that'd change with this new method, but if you're in the a/b test and getting the new ads you could confirm if you hit [embed] on this link and see if it shows an ad or not (or rejects you entirely):
