They need to bring back Flash in a big way.

They need to bring back Flash in a big way. Now that Ruffle has fixed the vulnerabilities and made flash applications open source, there's absolutely no reason not to have a renaissance.

Sorry I'm not a zoomer and it was a huge pain for me, especially with videos and Jesus Christ all the security holes. Good riddance

            >videos
            This is a signigicant detail.
At some point Flash stopped being just interactive animation platform, and became web-appication one. And thus it became the shit everybody hated. Bloated pages, ads, breakage of basic functionality, holes upon holes.
And then it died to everybody's relief, because everybody thought it will kill all the shit it brought onto web.
And then html5 allowed to all that filth to pour back in even larger amounts, because even 'it would require flash plugin and it is security liability' excuse is over.
But no accessible interactive animation format anymore.

Yeh. It was great for that though. And flash games were great. Flash pop ups were not. Flash video was shit.
But for animation and games it was fun.

I remember flash ads, and if you uninstalled it every single goddamned page on every single website would pop up a "this website has flash content on it, do you want to install flash?" dialog.

I will forever hate flash with the burning fury of a thousand suns, and a bunch of garbage games made in it will never change that. Frick flash and frick people who want to see it come back.

      HTML5?

we replaced the technology but not the tools
what made flash great was not the flash player [plugin], but flash itself, the program you use to create them

        Anonymous

ok so recreate the program that emits javascript code instead with minimal bloat and uses HTML5 canvas, done.
        >inb4 strongest flash fans cannot do this

          Anonymous

that'd be awesome, but it's a different problem. right now we have people doing the easier thing, making a replacement player, which both allows new things to be made with original tools, but also allows people to run existing flash files
but i agree that there should also be an equivalent replacement of flash, that can export animations in native html5 instead

idk, but again, it's not relevant, since the people who care about flash mainly care about pre-adobe flash, back when flash was relevant and popular

It'll be relevant if Adobe's lawyers come knocking. They're all about sending those C&D letters when other people start making money off their IP.

that is certainly a thing to think about

people who care about flash are glad it was put out of our misery

that makes as much sense as it doesn't, yea, flash is only wanted when it's wanted, like i loved flash animations and games, i hated flash websites and ads (unless they were cool like the original gorillaz one). in fact it was flash ads which finally made me figure out ad blocking back in idk 2006 or something, frick ads that make sound entirely

it depends on how you define it
even early on it was slow and janky, you couldn't pause or rewind or seek like a video, it ran like shit on my pentium 3 even though way better looking native games ran fine, etc
but there was tons of good shit made for it, so clearly the tooling was good
i tend to agree with both side of this argument, i'm sure it could have been done better technically, but there was lots of good stuff made for it, so what can you do?
