I really don't care if prisoners have access to the internet.
The main purpose of prison is to keep murderers away from the rest of society.
      Not rehabilitation, not punishment.
Furthermore, nobody can murder you over an internet connection.
Yes there are some things (like scamming, hacking) that would need to be policed, but you can do that without locking down devices or restricting internet access.
The GTA hacker, for example, should not be allowed near any electronics at all. But the vast majority of prisoners are not really a risk.

Bleeding heart leftists believe a murderer can be "rehabilitated"
Then they are released, and an innocent person loses their life when the murderer inevitably kills someone again.

But that's just murder. I suppose for other crimes, deterrence/punishment/rehabilitation are more valid reasons.

What makes you think the recidivism rates of murderers are higher than any other criminals?

            Anonymous

Obviously the recidivism rate is indeed higher for many crimes.
However, that's missing the bigger picture: the nature of the crime in question. Murder is very much a special case - and the results of recidivism are catastrophic. Furthermore, it's doubtful that a murderer would learn not to murder from punishment, or is capable of being rehabilitated, or is deterred from the threat of punishment.

On the other hand drug crimes, for example, are victimless crimes. Nobody should be in jail at all for those.
It doesn't really hurt anyone (but themselves) if a drug user shoots heroin again after being let out. It's not the government's job to save people from themselves.
While I disagree with any punishment at all for victimless crimes - there is an argument that a limited punishment for drug users could deter drug usage. However, even then, fines are probably a better approach overall than jail time as punishment/deterrence.

Shouldn't recidivism stats make it clear whether or not it's possible to rehabilitate or deter murderers?

            Anonymous

NTA but anon's point is that any recidivism is inherently very bad in the case of a murderer.

Attempts at rehabilitation means someone is going to die when it fails and you're never going to get 100% success rate in rehabilitating people who are that broken to kill others without reason.

Those are under the generic term "homocide" which just means someone caused the death of another human being.
Homicides for something like self-defense may not even be considered a crime that you'd even be tried for much less go to prison for. (Speaking as an American here as I'm well aware some countries treat all homicides as a crime regardless of circumstance)

Murder is homicide without just cause. Killing someone because you don't like them, trying to steal from them, or just any intentional killing where the victim is otherwise innocent.

            >Drug use doesn't really hurt anyone (but themselves)
Yeah, that's sort of the issue and why drug use isn't exactly victimless. Or, more accurately, drug use is victimless. A drug habit is NOT.
            https://www.youtube.com/@TylerOliveira/videos
This channel has a few videos about the state a city falls into when drug use is uncontrolled. In short, it's because when drug use fries the user's brain, and consumes all the user's money, and makes it hard for them to work normal jobs, the user has to resort to stealing things and leeching off government dole and charity that requires everyone else to pay for it. They don't dispose of enough refuse properly so the environment becomes a health hazard, and of course they've got no way to settle disputes but fighting and that doesn't change if you make everything they do legal.
It would be one thing if they all burned out and died in a few months but they can keep going like this for decades, and in the mean time, they're not contributing anything to the society who keeps them alive (barely).
I don't know if you think that it's a matter of stigma but someone reading this might, so I'll add that we can't solve that by just removing the stigma of drug use. They'll still fail to act normal and still hurt other people to feed the habit. We can't just give free drugs to everyone because too many people still can't work normal jobs after the drugs damage them.
Portugal has had success with decriminalization, but that's due to a robust and forceful rehab program and probably some other stuff I don't know about that change the game. You DO have to make many people feel like they're worth something when they're off the drugs to reliably keep them off them after all. If a person can only make friends through drugs, that's only going to encourage drug use.

I don't disagree with your arguments about murder.

Jumping off the roof isn't addictive and puts an end to your destructive decisions pretty darn quick, to contrast with the liability you become that everyone else has to pay for to keep alive (one way or another) in exchange for less productivity than you require to keep alive.
This doesn't mean that prison is the right answer for all druggies, but it definitely takes more effort to keep someone alive who can't work than it does to bury someone who jumped off a roof.

            This anon gets it.

            - All drugs should be legal for adults. You read that right. BUT they should have to be pharmaceutical grade, correctly dosed, no adulteration/heavy metals/etc. Basically turn every drug into something an adult can pickup at the pharmacy if they believe they need it. (This ends the drug war and drug cartel financing overnight. It also strips doctors of their control over people's lives, which they've proven they do not deserve.)
            - If you get addicted, overdose, or damage your body, it's on you. No lawsuits. Now if you get hurt because the pharma manufacturer fricked up, then you can sue.
            - If you frick up because you're high, you need your ass handed to you. Example: driving drunk or high. LE/corrections should be focused on that, not "omg duh drugz!"
            - We need expanded, effective addiction treatment for ALL addictions. People worry about drug addicts while the majority of the U.S. is grossly obese, everyone is addicted to caffeine to the point that people regularly blow their hearts out, and alcoholics plow the streets every weekend.
            - As this anon pointed out, harsh, violent response to trafficking.
            - He is also right that it is arbitrary. For example:

            [...]
            >drugs should all be available legally with no restriction
Hope you like finding out your niece is addicted to fentanyl next Thanksgiving.

            >Hope you like finding out your niece is addicted to fentanyl next Thanksgiving.
If you OD on an opioid paramedics can almost always save you. Hell, if someone just has a breathing bag they can keep you alive until you come out of it. Guess what happens if you OD on Tylenol? You're dead. No one can save you. You lay in a hospital until you expire because your liver is destroyed.
            >hurr people don't get addicted to Tylenol!
People get addicted to OTC painkillers all the time. People also die from them.

We need to address the root causes of addiction. Not enrich drug cartels by fighting pointless drug wars. Not create a class of street drugs so expensive that people rob/steal/have gun battles over it. It doesn't work and will never work.

Because there has to be a path to redemption, you shouldn't just be in prison for the rest of your life for petty shit like drug dealing and evading taxes, and even murderers should get a second chance, the problem is that the system is rigged against these people, if you're allowed outside you should be able to live a normal life, but that's not the reality, you get denied jobs, places to live, loans, etc, that's why there's so many people that can't stop going in and out of prison since they have a better life in prison than outside, plus, most of these people would have ended in the military if service was obligatory since most of them have a shit home to return when they finished the service.

This is only possible for criminals under the age of 20. After the age of 20, criminality is part of their mindset. They view everyone else as criminals, and theft and murder as normal. Something everyone does, no matter how you try to convince them otherwise. Study criminal psychology.

That is a fairly new age way to view prison, and it’s only as cope to allow for prisons to exist in the humanitarian ideology.

In other words, that belief only came about because humanists had to cope with prisons and their function as A DETERRENT for the behaviors a society wants to discourage.

So now prisons have their panties in a twist and confiscate all the laptops despite prisoners being unable to see this in the first place.

anon, you should know that most americans are mind-bendingly sadistic and view their prisons as not inflicting enough suffering for their satisfaction. the average american would vote in a second for prisons to be actual overt non-stop psychological and physical torture dungeons, even for really minor offenses like jaywalking and parking violations.
a lot of our people think our prisons are ineffective not because they don't rehabilitate criminals into useful members of society but because prisoners don't try to kill themselves as soon as they can.

Completely true and this thread is proof of it. The reason for this is that they have been driven insane by their prison-state existence which proclaims itself the land of freedom. Therefore, since they are going through a grueling existence to slavishly obey every single rule and regulation they see in a constant state of terror, they believe anyone who does not do so should be literally in hell as their only way to cope. Also they will be in hell for real after dying in prison because God feels the same way as they do on this topic.

America is a first world country with many third world citizens and third world crime. There is no rehabilitation, or place in society for any of them.

            Anonymous

Well, I agree. Ethnic minorities who are convicted of violent or property crimes should basically just be shot. There's a lot of white people in jail for casual, based "crimes" like DUI or winning a fist fight and I would rather they have opportunities for education or job training and rehabilitation while in prison than not. It does not matter if these things are offered to the nogs because they will not make use of these, and it does not matter if they are released after a relatively short sentence because they will be back in anyway. So for these reasons I support a rehabilitative model of prison for those who can follow the rules while in prison, are interested in taking the opportunities offered to them, and have the potential to make use of them, because the only individuals who satisfy these criteria are the ones who deserve another chance at life after conviction.

what the frick is the difference between the police and the guvmnt?

Why is nobody actually explaining what happened?

Can someone explain the problem? He bought a second hand laptop and gained admin privileges or something? Why does that require other devices to be seized?

He bought a laptop. He couldn't make it boot his own drive. Tried going into BIOS. Password locked. Went online and ask "Hey does anyone know the password" and some crackers online actually figured out the universal BIOS password for this line of laptop. So now prisons have their panties in a twist and confiscate all the laptops despite prisoners being unable to see this in the first place.

This docking station has one USB-A and one USB-C connection inside the dock. Devices such as web cameras, printers, wifi dongles, external keyboards and mice, external monitors, etc can all be hooked up before screwing closed the docking station. This provides near unlimited flexibility to create special use case docking stations for:

    video calls
    printing
    back-up of files
    WACOM drawing pads
    turning in files
    ADA-compliant monitors and keyboards

      I think the opposite
you should be condemned to absolute boredom
      1 person cell
      zero communication with other inmates
      super clean and futuristic complex
zero clutter white paint, epoxy floor
kino paint accents for numbers and signaletic
only one rugged prison tablet per prisoner
      no internet no games etc
only a handful of pre selected classic books per week and maybe one black and white movie on the tablet or possibly only technical courses and tutorial + exam about a random or chosen topic
food and possible meds given in the cell at fixed time twice a day on a tray no silverware, no interaction you eat with your hand and put the tray back
one ten minute visit behind a glass every three month
5mn shower in the cell with a countdown at fixed time
      1 doc visit per month
      that's it
everytime you ape out or bend the rules you get 1 more year
no sentence negociation no early release
camera live streams with audio all over prison for accountability of inmate + prison
only shower/toilets are out of view and audio is automatically muted when you step in this part of your cell
light is ony dimmed for night time
one hour of outdoor time alone on the roof top doing whatever you want (no tablet) so you basically stare at the sky

Instead of making prisons "better," just get rid of them entirely. Without the worry of having their life disrupted for years over a murder trial that they will eventually be acquitted in, good people will be able to defend themselves instead of waiting for pigs to eventually maybe show up in time to shoot the wrong person. Putting people in prison for any length of time obviously don't prevent crimes from being committed, but if everyone were to take an active interest in their own protection, there's only so many muggings a criminal could commit before being permanently removed from the gene pool.

Only about 4% of cases in the US go to trial. The rest are people getting screwed by court appointed attourneys. If you are innocent and accused of a felony and don't have $20,000 in cash, you're going to prison for 2-5 years.

        absurd, isn't it?
we should probably be sending them down to their cell in chutes of razor blades and blow salt into the cell every 15 minutes right, right? full blast lights all the time, constant randomized noises blaring loudly out of speakers, electric shocks at random, the whole deal. turning them into literal hell on earth for all the people caught jaywalking or shoplifting food or looking at a cop wrong on the subway. that would make you feel a lot better about the fact that you demand and receive so little from your governments while you're outside of prison, wouldn't it?

How does a prison laptop end up on ebay? Did someone smuggle it out?

      Anonymous

Prison devices that are purchased by the inmate or for the inmate are their property.
Could also be that it was just part of a surplus sale, stuff out of prisons end up on government surplus auctions all the time which end up on ebay of course. I doubt a laptop would be outright purchased but issued as part of schooling or whatever it would have been used for.

      ):
      >So how does a prison laptop end up on eBay?
      >The laptop that Zhang bought came from a state whose corrections department contracts with a Milwaukee-based nonprofit to dispose of its old laptops. But instead of recycling the devices, the organization resold them, selling out of 100 Securebooks after Zhang’s post went viral.
I'll note that "dispose of" doesn't mean recycle, and it's standard for IT asset disposal/recovery companies to sell anything that still has value, so despite the implication it's not clear that the nonprofit did anything it wasn't supposed to.
