The back door wasn't in the open source, it was on fake versions, specifically fake dll files, of third party stuff used by open source apps.

You mean normal sites like sourceforge or malicious sites created specifically to distribute malware?

sourceforge has been compromised for awhile

I'm pretty sure it would load a dll from a generic location - no fake version needed.

How do you know the distribution is built from the source they supply?

You need to look for them and add extra code to discover and remove vulnerabilities. You can't search for what you don't know so there are pretty much vulnerabilities in all existing software that no one has discovered yet.

just write what looks like correct code and deliberately keep a vulnerability you know about. boom, backdoored open source software until someone else discovers it

Have you heard of code obfuscation?
That can be used to do more than just try to hide your code.

It can be used on parts of the code to make it look like the backdoors do something else, like, make it look like it is part of some telemetry or something.

The same way strcat says GrapheneOS is secure and hardened because the source is available. Yet there has never been a third party security audit and no one that uses it reads the source code to verify.

There's is a recent interview of the guy in charge of videoLAN where he explains how they were targeted multiple times by the chinese and americans, but what is funny enough is that the french secret services also contacted him (because he is french and videoLAN is also french), and he said something like:
    > I can't tell you what they asked me.
But that's pretty obvious to me, i will let you make your own conclusion.

    >The issue of a hijacked DLL concerns scilexer.dll (needed by Notepad++) on a compromised PC, which is replaced by a modified scilexer.dll built by the CIA. When Notepad++ is launched, the modified scilexer.dll is loaded instead of the original one. It doesn’t mean that CIA is interested in your coding skill or in your sex message content typed in Notepad++, but rather it prevents raising any red flags while the DLL does data collection in the background.
