Is it over for Tim Apple? Why are they even competitive as a company anymore? No wonder why Micro$hit managed to reach the same valuation as them say what you say about them but at least they are leading in AI.

idk it seems kinda pointless I can only see people using these with their macbooks to get extra monitors (meta's quest can already do this) or to watch videos/movies

      Anonymous

You can't spawn virtual monitors if you connect it to your Mac. You just have preview of the physical ones. Totally unused demanded feature. Macs have a limitation where you can't really connect to them remotely like through RDP with Windows unless they have a monitor or virtual hdmi monitor dingle plugged in that emulates it. So I guess this limitation comes from that.

This is a bullshit lie. I get that it's fun to hate Apple but you are simply wrong. It can detect when you are looking at your Mac and offer the screen up in the googles with full sizing and layout control. Your Mac appears just as another app and you can multitask as usual. I can make it as wide as I want or as high resolution as I want as long as the Mac supports rendering it. 10k seems to be the max limit.

Maybe. I'm guessing they expect killer apps to come from others, like the iPhone/smartphones in general. They should have made one themselves. Or maybe and I don't know about it.

It doesn't even matter for Apple if it flops or not. They could not sell a single unit and they would still be able to tank it.

I don't think people on IQfy understand how good they are at the asking price, they see the Apple logo, see the $3500 and kneejerk react, doing zero research into what they say. I'm not saying they're perfect. They have some limitations. Like the external screen is pointless. All the glass makes it heavier than it needs to be. I can't wait for them to release a cutdown version without this. The eyes are actually hard to see so the display is nothing but a battery drain. You can disable it in settings for extra battery life though. Goes from 2.5hrs to 5hrs. They get rather warm, but not hot. I can see it becoming an issue in the summer, especially with all the black.

Compared to the hololens though which are feather light. But you look like a goon and 65 minutes of battery usage. 2-3 hours standby. The hololenses ui is unintuitive requiring a 3 hour training video where you sit connected to a wall going through all the gestures. Learning the special Microsoft pointing shit which doesn't always work. The gripping is ass. They actually get hot from use and they're plastic and creaky. Cortana is a pain right in the ass. And Microsoft is constantly collecting data on you with no way to turn it off.

The Vision Pro teaches you how to use it within 5 minutes. Hand swipes, pinching, zooming, and siri voice commands which is way easier than cortana. Apple collects no data on its users unless you opt in.

AR isn't a dead end, particularly with the incredible AI tools we have now that can do real-time image recognition and the very nature of the language models being just a bunch of compressed data, it could shit out things that are mostly correct most of the time about the physical world. I would say something like google glass is the way to go, insofar as it wasnt bulky and heavy and was rather conservative in its design, but the real problem I think is that people just dont want things on their face. It makes the whole experience more of an appliance like a washing machine or a toaster - you pull it out and use it at home. You dont carry around a large headset and take it on and off quickly at will like you can take a phone out of your pocket and just make calls.

I was also thinking of industrial applications. I work with mechanics at a warehouse but they’re always struggling flipping through books of diagrams to find a valve or something in these huge machines they have to fix. Imagine if the machine manufacturers developed for the headset, so that when the mechanics work on the machine, the headset points out what parts of the machine to take apart to get to where they need to work. Course there’s that cable hanging off the headset which is a safety issue but still, it kinda gets my imagination going

Yeah that's the thing the Hololens was advertised for.
The problem is Microsoft didn't bother implementing decent enough computer vision API and left that part open to the supposed companies who should get them for their workforce.
Discarding the fact that industrial companies aren't software developers.
Back then algorithms also were no where near where they needed them to be and I'm skeptical that they are now.
Sure there's some sort of transformer model for every task on huggingface but that's a long way from being something that's reliable enough for mission critical AR.

The thing is we've already seen what people want to do with VR because Oculus and Valve have done it all for almost a decade. It's not something you wear on the bus or when you go jogging. It's not going to be used in warehouses. It's not going to help drivers. Google Glass was more practical for everything the Vision is supposed to do and it failed. I have no idea why Apple didn't have a dozen VR games on day one. This is like if the original iPhone didn't have Safari.

That’s because the product was a flop even before release and they knew it. I guess they wanted to at least have a launch and sell a limited production run to at least present a win to investors. If this was a serious product launch there would absolutely be all sorts of games and apps and it would be priced much more aggressively. At some point they realized it was a loser but were already to far invested and brought it to market in a half-assed manner.

supports all the games I play. I just finished playing world of warcraft for like a 4 hour raid (with the vision pro plugged in obviously) the experience can't be matched by anything else I have ever used.

by the way I was able to install aethersx2 and I can play PS2 games and openemu so I can play all those roms too. its such a cool experience to have a display right in my field of vision, I pick up a bluetooth controller, pair it, and play games floating in mid air. It is the coolest thing I have ever used hands down.

Its unreasonable to spend 3500 dollars to play old as hell games and emulate almost 25 year old consoles.

So you just raided with your Mac's screen mirrored and stretch onto a larger virtual one? Was that worth $3500 + tip? Could you not have just spent like $600 on better monitor?

yeah we know ESL pajeet, you don't have $3.50 to your name, let alone $3500. Maybe if you scam some little old lady into buying you one from a call center, you might have one... one day.

I think this’ll flop because it doesn’t follow apple’s traditional design guidelines. The user experience is not so great. It’s heavy, has bad battery life and so on…

Apple always tried to give perfect user experience with technology. This product feels like a microsoft product that tries to do everything and do it poorly.

You should really talk to this guy

What a stupid question, of course people will wear this. Watch as news articles complain about people wearing this shit in public next month.

People are going to be wearing three or four headsets at a time while they drive and just be running over kids left and right
