      Love it. Was a bit obscure to me at first but the more time I spend with it the more interesting it gets. Richard Wilhelm's platonizing interpretation is interesting and worth visiting, though it can't be ultimately correct. Jung had one interesting thing to say regarding the fortune telling aspect.

      It's a philosophy of change, its use as an oracle is extraneous and actually somewhat controversial

        >Richard Wilhelm's platonizing interpretation is interesting and worth visiting, though it can't be ultimately correct.
        Short of maybe one other contemporary translator or going straight to current chinese sources, he's the only practitioner worth half a frick who was actively engaged with the philosophy well enough to make a worthwhile translation. Others are extremely lacking. Not to say Wilhem is without flaws, but others are just that bad.

    I make most of my decisions using it and it has done me good and forced me to expand my comfort zone and examine myself and my actions closer

    Isn't this only an instruction manual on how to perform a fortune telling method?
    Am I misinformed and there is more to it?

    I am interested in all kinds of divination but now I'm learning astrology and it's so complex I have no time for other methods.

    It's so mysterious and indescribably unsettling to me. It's so old and both its origins and its contents are so opaque.

    Is this book alone enough to become a good practitioner of I Ching? Or am I supposed to read many more to get a good understanding of this divination method?

      The edition in OP pic comes with a bunch of appendices and texts that the Chinese use to interpret the I Ching

      As far as I can tell from what I've read therein. The I Ching is most useful as a thinking aid to help yourself explore avenues of thought that you may not automatically consider. Indeed, the one who has grasped the Dao of the I Ching does not need it

      I have 3 books on it but I find myself using this one the most because it's simplicity

    i flipped a penny 6 times. heads is yang (unbroken line), tails yin.

    using edition a:
    >“God comes forth in the sign of the Arousing”2 : when in the spring the life forces stir again, all things come into being anew. “He brings to perfection in the sign of Keeping Still”: thus in the early spring, when the seeds fall to earth, all things are made ready. This is an image of providing nourishment through movement and tranquillity. The superior man takes it as a pattern for the nourishment and cultivation of his character. Words are a movement going from within outward. Eating and drinking are movements from without inward. Both kinds of movement can be modified by tranquillity. For tranquillity keeps the words that come out of the mouth from exceeding proper measure, and keeps the food that goes into the mouth from exceeding its proper measure. Thus character is cultivated.
    this is kind of poetically inflated but it gets the point across and is agreeable. it makes sense to consider tranquility an important part in modifying ones balance, and describe the specific processes involved.

    edition b:
    >When an empty vessel follows the wind, it is favorable to cross great rivers. The sage is aware of the danger and overcomes all difficulties while crossing great rivers. It portends great blessing.
    this is too vague to be of any real use to me. i dont think overcoming all difficulties is possible in every situation, so the advice isnt just vague, its misleading.

    using a different kind:
    >“Yi [Nourishment] is such that constancy here means good fortune,” for when Nourishment is correct, there will be good fortune.
    >Thus none fail to depend on Top Yang in order to obtain Nourishment, and this is why the text says: “They depend on this one for Nourishment.” As the ruler of all the yin lines, Top Yang must not suffer disrespect. Thus “severity will bring good fortune.”}
    this sounds fine to me. those relying on me are still too immature to learn by persuasion (i have to accept their concessions since theyre not smart enough to understand rational statements, so i will have to use a firmer hand.

      heres what that one has to say for me

      >9 FOR THE TOP PLACE Nourishment gives rise both to trouble and good fortune. It is favourable to cross the great river (or sea).
      >COMMENTARY The first sentence means that (in any case) we shall enjoy great blessings.
      im sorry is this supposed to be so simple its vague beyond any usefulness? i should cross the river, based on what? what great blessing, and how should that have related to the hexagram? that great blessing can be anywhere from the common blessing like my life or food enough, or great wealth and rank. theres no real connection and the blessing could be brought by pretty much any circumstance. this edition is useless.
