Matte is not bad and handle reflections better.

          Anonymous

Wrong. Matte distorts the colors and contrast of a display, raising black levels across the entire display and even reducing pixel level details. It's use case is for office monitors that need to display text and information in brightly lit environments. It's the objectively wrong technology for a media driven display.

Why is your smartphone glossy? Your television?

            >Wrong. Matte distorts the colors and contrast of a display, raising black levels across the entire display and even reducing pixel level details.
Glossy reflects light while matte difuses it, however, if there are no reflections on both they can produce the same black levels.
The issue is the polarizing layer QD-OLED lacks, which is why despite being semi-glossy it raises black levels under light reflections.

            >The issue is the polarizing layer QD-OLED lacks, which is why despite being semi-glossy it raises black levels under light reflections.

its more to do with quantum dot layer since they get activated by ambient light producing pink tint, putting a polarizing layer on top of them would halve the light output and might not be viable anyway.

            Anonymous

They range from doing a pixel refresh when you put the monitor to sleep, doing shit when you turn it off or doing a slight shift of the pixels while it's on. There's also stuff like auto-dimming and user end things like hiding the taskbar, but none of it is "crippling" unless you're a totally whiny homosexual.

You're free to stick with shittier displays, nobody is stopping you. OLED isn't for poorgays and crybabies.

Burn in can't be "fixed" without some fundamental breakthrough in OLED materials. Lifespan will continue to improve incrementally, however, as new technologies are developed (e.g. microlens arrays, phosphorescent OLED).

      Anonymous

You cannot fix burn-in, it's literally just normal degradation from use. It happens all the time the screen is in use, the reason it becomes permanently visible after static images are displayed for a long time is that the wear & degradation happens in patterns based on the image. Since some parts of any image are going to be brighter than others, those bright parts wear down quicker than the dark ones which means the pixels in the bright areas, being worn down, are incapable of achieving the same brightness levels as the pixels in dark areas and this can become visible once the difference is large enough. This is what burn-in is.

For now this is a fundamental problem because the organic materials in the organic LEDs wear down and degrade in this manner and it's not going to be fixed unless somebody comes up with something completely novel to replace them. There's microLED of course, which does not use organic materials and should not degrade, but the problem with those is that they're hard to manufacture at scales so small as to make pixels in the density required even of modern TVs, let alone PC monitors or portable devices.

And down with useless gimmicks or calibration certifications that justjack up the price. Anyways it seems there are only 2 (korean) manufacturers that offer 27in consumer-grade oled panels. The prices will stay around $800-1000 for quite long as a baseline.

Why can't they just use black and and white oled screen as a backlight for pixelperfect backlighting of lcd screen to make a perfect display?

      Anonymous

Same thing would happen. Some of the backlight pixels would wear down faster than others and you'd still get permanent image retention (aka burn-in). There are some screens which are actually dual-layer LCD and use the back panel as a pixel-controllable backlight for the first one. These manage nearly OLED-like contrast but are less efficient (the backlight needs to be brighter to compensate for more light loss in more screen layers) and probably have some other disadvantages. These haven't really caught on, it's a shame since I would've been curious to try one.

Tech needs to progress, and LCD performs worse in every measurable front.
