At least, you guys, don't have automatically ticked checkboxes to install a bar for browser or an AV anymore.

most distros install from a .deb or rpm or whatever nowadays almost exactly like a windows installer and your example of firefox is one piece of software that best supports this you fricking doorknob

Hell, even with the Internet I'm wary of package managers. How many times have upgrades totally broken a Linux system? What happens if your software you like is no longer maintained?

You can do the same on linux.
            >how many times have upgrades totally broken a linux system?
None for me. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It's a good practice to check your distro news before updating.
Counter question: how many times you got BSOD?
            >what happens if your software you like is no longer maintained?
What happens if your software you like is no longer maintained? I fail to see the point of this question. It can happen to you too.

I've been using Linux for over a decade now so maybe my opinion is warped, but I have a desktop purely for gaming running Windows and holy FRICK it is so bad.
did you know the desktop directory resides on Microsoft's cloud? I have not been able to figure out how to disable that. my PC will randomly not unsleep when trying to use it, resulting in the need to reboot. there was one time that I was connected to the internet but the settings UI claimed I was not. all while I was actively talking to people in a group chat. also, the settings UI blanked out some dragbars due to not having the prerequisite hardware for using such dragbars (logical UI decision), but only SOME of the dragbars were disabled. some appeared active, but when dragged, would immediately reset to their original positions.
I have used modern Windows, have a M2 Macbook Pro, and several Linux machines. I state without any doubt that Linux offers the best modern desktop experience for actually getting shit done.

      >did you know the desktop directory resides on Microsoft's cloud?
Is this true or just schizo shit? I haven't used windows 11 yet, but I've done a pretty good job severing my 10 install from microsoft's botnet. I want to get away from windows entirely, but it's just too convenient to avoid. I'll always use linux for travel and lighter stuff, though. I drive debian on my laptop exclusively.

        >There is a way to do this, but it involves editing the registry, because in Windows 10 and 11 the Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders in the OneDrive folder are the default

Oh it's a onedrive thing. I've gutted that shit completely, none of my files go to microsoft. I don't even associate my windows install with my microsoft account in the first place.

My 80+ year old grandparents use Linux Mint and are able to navigate it surprisingly well, for their use case. I'd say it's a better system for the average user, who will normally just watch youtube and do word processing tasks, email, etc.

Things get more complicated when you start trying to do any real work and/or gaming, though. Be ready to waste your life tinkering.
