What I don't understand is why there's no mainstream alternative to Twitter. There are a hundred walled gardens and mostly defunct political twitter clones, but nothing even remotely convenient and popular. And yes it has to be popular with the normies, that was part of Twitter's strength even if it sounds moronic.

            > why there's no mainstream alternative to Twitter

Common mistake is thinking there's a technical solution to a social situation. The superior choice is to self-host your own blog... but then you have to convince other people to accept and use your solution. Twitter, Facebook, Fandom(wikia), Tumblr, they're clunkydogshit, enshittified so much the UI of each is more than half irrelevant garbage by screenspace, but these places are where the people are.

You could have a storefront in the perfect building on the perfect street, but if nobody knows your store is there then you can't pay rent. Location, location, location. These celebrity technocrats don't want to build solutions, they want to be landlords -- aristocrats, really.

In my experience, no, not really. While browsing a profile, you would get prompts asking you to login, but you could dismiss them. You could still see replies and threads and the trends. You could also search for tweets without an account. All of that was gone with Musk. Musk also fricked up archiving websites like archive.today and the Wayback Machine.

In-browser filtering is more accurate (e.g. can block specific resources on a domain), has more coverage (can block URL patterns or resolve CNAMEs) and more configurable (easier to enable/disable a filter), while also doing cosmetic filtering with CSS rules. DNS-level filtering is useful as a fallback for non-browser applications, but it's not better than it in any way.

I've used it for a little bit and found it useful, but I might as well ask. Is it possible to have it off by default? It seems to break some sites even if I didn't block anything. Maybe some default setting is bad, I haven't checked.

        yes
simply select the * thats to the right of the domain name, then click the on/off button. this will make umatrix disabled for all domains by default
then save your changes and enable it per-site

I've used it for a little bit and found it useful, but I might as well ask. Is it possible to have it off by default? It seems to break some sites even if I didn't block anything. Maybe some default setting is bad, I haven't checked.

      Use firefox nightly

      Anonymous

You can do it in the default Firefox version by going to about:debugging -> this firefox and adding a temp addon from a folder but you have to do that on every restart so unless you keep your browser open for very very long periods of time better to just move to nightly.

      Set urlclassifier.features.socialtracking.skipURLs and urlclassifier.trackingSkipURLs in about:config to abs.twimg.com,abs-0.twimg.com

This works if you don't want to disable Firefox tracking protection on x.com altogether but I found that I also need to add pbs.twimg.com to see images. If you just care about the text you can leave it out.

Again, you don't get it. If you live in a shitty apartment, you don't just abandon it before you have a better place to go to. Attitudes like "anyplace is better than this" informs me you haven't tried. To keep using this metaphor, you could move to a "better" apartment that's outside city limits. Sure, you have a 90 minute commute each way, and you can't get groceries without driving your car, and your friends no longer visit, but hey that last apartment had leaky pipes and a noisy neighbour so "anything" would be better, right?

The (shitty) software isn't the product. This should be eye-stabbingly obvious as the software turned into fetid mule turds. THE AUDIENCE is the product, and you can't just make a new audience out of thin air when you fancy a change.

It doesn't help that every alternative is still lacking. I think Bluesky could be a decent alternative but currently it lacks DMs and I think the ability to post videos. It also lacks corporate presence

You can be dismissive if you'd like but the site has lost a significant amount of value according to him even and has lost a significant amount of users as well.
With a large amount of outstanding debt owed and all of his businesses doing worse than they were when he bought it, there's a probable chance he'll end up selling off the site within another year after he did all he could to completely tank it after it was finally making a profit

usually things musk does makes some sense
But changing twitter to X is the single weirdest idea ever
It just doesnt work. You dont use "x" in spoken speech in same way you use "twitter", no ones gonna say "xeets"
X- refers to adult content in most circumstances
its a single letter, it conveys no meaningful information on its own

      Anonymous

Not only is it just a letter, it's literally the worst letter you could pick for a such mainstream product. The letter "x" is the most used letter that is used as just a letter, followed by "y", as when people say "im gonna do x thing or y thing"
