except... that only happens if you get millions of views a month or upscale to 8k which takes a lot of time to encode even with h264

your best bet is to use google photos to get a vp9 encode

x265 encoder is better anyway for good quality encodes and above, and doable on personal devices.
Also, YT encodes, besides the shit output constraints, use fast encoding modes anyway (except when demoing a new format).
OP seems to think YT will encode at --speed=0 for him. lol.

Sorry but this is just moronic tribalist user-level talk, you clearly have no business experience. A format is not going to gain any traction if there is a high barrier to use. By your very nature of claiming only the wealthy can use your chosen dingus, you doom it to languish and disappear.

Because AV1 is interchabgeable with AVIF. In other words we finally have the ebin GIF replacement after decades of the whole "15 competing stabdards" thing.

You don't understand you dumbass. You can make LOSSLESS "gifs" now. No more butchering quality.

You take a segment of an AV1 video (say 10 seconds) and mux it into an AVIF file.

H264 requires a video player. AVIF does not.

HEVC does have HEIC but it's not open sores.

As the other anon is trying to tell you, animated shit is a subset of video. The <video> html tag was introduced with html5 which is 16 years old already.

And again, as the other anon told you, you appear to imagine magical distinctions that don't exist.
If we are talking about the web, the web supports the video tag already (since the day browsers decided to frick flash with html5).
If we are talking arbitrary limitations by some websites, some websites may not allow AVIF too.
And it's probably safe to assume that platforms/services/websites that support mp4/h264 outnumber those that support AVIF.

You know, I see people whining about how corporations are evil and whatever, but then you see so much petty shit going on in the world all the time and people are unrepentant or even gloat about it, and then I think to myself, nah, corporations aren't evil, people deserve everything they get, including the corpos.

your cpu is dogshit and you don't have hardware decoding, it's not an av1 problem, it's a (You) problem
150$ phones can decode 1080p60 av1 through dav1d just fine, you should consider upgrading that 2007 Thinkpad you got there buddy

Years ago I had a VPS to download movies, and I used YouTube to reencode the videos to a smaller size, since my home connection was garbage. At some point Google started scanning your videos even if you set them to private, and videos with copyrighted content get immediately blocked, so this is much less useful than it used to be.
