I mean a public librarian's job is to give the public access to what they want, nothing really objectionable about thay. I'm not a public librarian, but I don't really gatekeep. Gatekeep implies I don't want people to read what I'm reading. I would love it if they did. Do you have any idea how overjoyed I would be if more people read the things I liked so I could talk to them about it? I get the sense that you are implying that thinking poorly about shitty books is gatekeeping though.

I’m willing to read sincerely good books written by black Americans or Africans. I just don’t know of any.

Never read them. I thought Beloved was okay.

can someone explain to me this meme of "representation" in art
why do these people feel the need for fiction to validate their existence

For the white liberals that insist on it, art is nothing more than a professional endeavor, one which has historically excluded non-whites. That, or it’s merely another means by which to push progressive propaganda. As for those that sincerely like it as art, it’s usually because it’s somehow exotic to them, which feels nice to them, given the absurdly sterile lives they live. The truth is these people don’t really know why they do what they do. My favorite was Dark Academia, which takes all of aesthetics of gothic Catholic Europe and just strips it or all the substance so that lesbians and black girls can don it like a robe. Why? They don’t really know. They like the aesthetic, but they don’t know why, and so they push to have it made novel somehow.

For the non-white artists, it’s all of the above, but also the cope that they are capable of being good artists if they just weren’t excluded. So in order to allow non-white artists to make great art, you have to push for it.

      That about covers it really.

All those aesthetics like dark academia and cottagecore were just a way of getting around outright saying
        >I like the culture and aesthetics of white people.
The occasional terminally online black girl complained, the tumblr mood boards threw some black people in sweaters on them for a bit, and then the world kind of moved on.

They don't have theory of mind nor empathy and are thus completely unable to relate to anyone that isn't an exact replica of themselves.

    No. Everyone should read.
But that doesn't mean I think everything written is worth reading.

An actual Librarian is pretty overkill for a fiction collection, no?
And of course gatekeeping in nonfiction is exceptionally important.
So I would have to say the graphic is incorrect, even if well-intentioned.

So 8 billion stories? Must be a big shelf.
Say, what about Hitler's story? David Duke's? The Unabomber's? How about Kyle Rittenhouse's story, think there's room on the shelf for him? I get the feeling that 'everyone's story' doesn't include personae non gratae
