By the time the Persians made it to Rome they would have found the same psychopaths Hannibal had to deal with. There was no conquering Rome, unless you had a viable plan to genocide all of Rome.

You break through the gates, go in and sack the city.
          There, you genocided Rome.

            self-explanatory.
picrel went to the Senate to convince them to support a Parthian expedition. 23 stabs to the back put an end to it. Remember what they took from us.

That's really interesting. I didn't know Caesar was killed because he was planning a Parthian invasion. There is a theory the israeli revolt happened because of the Parthian wars as well, since israeli merchants used that territory for the east to west infinite rare metals loop, and romans had strong laws against merchants abusing rare metals at some point.

            Anonymous

That was the final straw. The optimates could not risk having a triumphant Caesar return to Rome a la Alexander (provided he played it smarter than Crassus which is very probable given their backgrounds and track records). The israelites certainly took advantage of Parthian-Roman animosity to rip off both sides, but in this particular case I don't think they were the main instigators. Senatorial elites had lost their "Romanness" since before Sulla, they didn't need an outside force to push them off the cliff.

Literally everyone at the time was less oppressive than the spartans. Even the chimpy latin polities who often just enslaved entire enemy towns didn't have an entire ethnic group being oppressed and enslaved as a fundamental part of their civilization.

I never had the perspective, sincerely. I could never see the Greek cities as virtuous good guys neither the Persians as evil conquerors.
Even as a pre-teen, watching stuff about heroic Spartans defeating the persian invaders, I always saw the spartans as just another nation of warriors fighting other nation of warriors, but none of them were good.
