Bolt Thrower basically did the same gimmick first.
You also have newer bands like Minenwerfer and Kannonenfieber

Carolus Rex was the last good album, Jockes beer chugging habit has destroyed his ability to sing, and the new albums all sound the same. The issue I think is that instead of playing metal with a war/history theme the band has become a way to spit out reddit-tier history factoids in the form of pop-metal, the priorities have done a 180. There are plenty of other bands; Civil War, Running Wild, Bolt thrower come to mind.

Being Swedish, Carolus Rex has a special place in my heart.
But yeah, the albums after that were generic radio stuff. Cant blame them though, the metal genre is pretty dead today.
I dont know how many times they've remade Rise of Evil. They were also complete Wehraboos at first, but its probably worse today since they mostly pick the most reddit-tier historical anecdote from Wikiepdia and make a song out of it.
Carolus Rex was great because it had a theme with more depth.

When I was younger (now 28) I listened to them often but nowadays not so much. I occasionally still listen to them but most of their songs are very similar imo.

Carolus Rex. All songs. Both the english and swedish versions - which change the meaning of the songs; a detail I appreciate.
    >Are there other examples of other bands or individuals making music about historical events?
Many. From what I've heared, Bolt Thrower is often advertised as the "based" alternative to Sabaton. Many bands also cover historical topics and themes - Iron Maiden comes to my mind.

Jimmie Driftwood was an Arkansas IQfy teacher who wrote songs about famous American events, and his “Battle of New Orleans” became a mega hit for country star Johnny Horton. This started a fad for “saga songs”, either based on real IQfy or with an Americana/frontier vibe, sometimes tied into movie soundtracks.

Most of their new stuff is overly generic and samey.

Agreeing with the other Anons, Carolus Rex was the last good album from them. It had a unified theme and it actually seemed like they gave a shit when they wrote it. It had the undefinable quality of "soul" which their music is otherwise kind of devoid of, especially lately.

I think their negative backslide, though, is mostly because half the band left after Carolus Rex. Jocke has been phoning it in since then anyway.
