That all progressives repress their desire to castrate themselves. See: Adorno

      Anonymousn

      >repress their desire to castrate themselves
Do you mean they repress their desire in order to caste themselves or they repress their desire of being castrated? If the former, then nothing could apply less to Adorno, whose whole critique was about the way human desire is appropriated for ends that work against desire. See his critique of Brave New World, for example: he thought it was lazy, and defeatist, because it mocked a society striving to take desire seriously.

Zizek has a really good explanation of this graph in one of his books. I think it was The Sublime Object of Ideology. You don’t really have to get this graph to get Lacan though. Moreover, you won’t really get the graph if you don’t already understand what Lacan means by the terms on them. If I remember right it’s in essence an outline of the way that psychic energies get turned into the triad of the real, symbolic, and phantastic on the top loop and the bottom loop is about how signification occurs. Read from left to right it’s how the person constitutes himself with an identity and from bottom to top it’s how signification can occur such that the individual can use it to constitute himself.

As you say its more of a map rather than a diagram. Or a junxtaposition of the two processes you walk about.

Once you've got the endless retreat of The Real (Name of the Father, Phallus) you're pretty much good to go: there is nothing behind the curtain you can understand, because to understand it is to remove it from behind the curtain.

Also explains fetish inflation as the signification of the real results in the real becoming "unreal".

Fetish identifies that a real exists and projects images into the consciousness.

Imagine for a moment [[[HORRIFYING ACTUAL REAL]]] => MUMMY IS OILY

The fetishist then takes MUMMY IS OILY => I like latex
          And symbolises the image.

The image alone is terrifying. The real is yet more terrifying.

Imagine we explore "MUMMY IS OILY" and discover that your mother was a 1990s camera prostitute on the early internet and regularly oiled herself before fricking herself with an (undersized) horse wiener dildo. This "REAL" is then discovered to merely be an image or a symbol.

Once the "REAL" is permanently reduced to the non-real, you discover that a new terrifying real lies behind that. Instead of Latex you're now into inflation latex play. The fetish "inflates" to account for the unaccountable excess of the real which can never be image-agined.

(You saw your father fricking your mother before he left, she was pregnant, that's where the inflation comes from. Now you're into snuff).

That's the process of fetish inflation. It happens in therapy with the therapeutic uncovering of trauama: there is always a trauma behind the trauma. And the name of that Trauma is the Unknowable Name of the Father (God), it is The Father's Phallus (not his actual wiener, your imagination of his wiener), it is the REAL which is so horrifying as soon as you see it you make it unhorrifying, so you create yet another hidden horror.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain Dorothy.

would you mind explaining what lacan meant by the different terms then? i understand castration, jouissance, etc. but the mathematical terms still perplex me.

Go find a PDF of the sublime object of ideology and read that section on the graph. Zizek will do a much more thorough examining of the graph then I will be able to accomplish. Essentially, Lacan is the closest to Freud than any of his descendants and so you can read a lot of his work as an update to strictly Freudian thought. The basis of it is the triad of the real, symbolic, and fantastic. The phantastic is the easiest to understand because it’s pretty much what it is at name: phantasy. The symbolic is much of what we would consider external reality except that Lacan realizes that a tree is a tree because that’s what we call it and how we understand it as such he can pretty much capture the entirety of material reality under symbolism. The real is much stranger and isn’t something that we ever directly experience, we have to posit it’s existence because we can observe it’s excepts in reality. Essentially, if creation of the symbolic universe was ex nihilo then the real is this nothing from which it all sprang forth. It is confusion, lack, everything which is too terrible or incomprehensible for us to make sense of with language. Jouissance is Lacan’s rendition of the positive attainment of desire. Following traditional Freudian logic when castration occurs and the subject is first exposed to lack the subject sets up jouissance as a feeling he imagines he would have if only he could have what he can’t. (In Freudian terms he is denied his mother) this is the beginning of culture and what separates man from animal. All the rest of the terms are technical terms for how the subject processes this intense traumatism of lack and it gets a lot more complicated than I could explain in 3000 characters. Once again, just read the Zizek, don’t let the idiots who can’t understand him ruin him for you. Really, he’s one of the smartest people alive right now

This is a tell that you like to appeal to authority over building arguments on common fundamentals. This is an evolutionary adaption rooted in similar factors as homosexuality. You find a way to cope with not having authority, power and access to females yourself so you defer to those that do have power and make excuses for why you do so. Not being a competitor for females signals that you're not a threat, deferring to authority signals the same.

Humor is an adaptation that allows apes to deescalate. This extends to peers unlike the instinct to want to defer to authority.
The formula for any joke always includes some sort of challenge with some element of danger that's resolved.
Two apes meet going opposite ways on a fallen tree over a river, one fears a conflict is coming but then notices the other is also fearing the same thing. The threat is resolved by that knowledge and the relief releases heroin. This associates the other ape with heroin so now they're best friends.
