What happened?

It used to be the "just werks" distro, I installed it recently and nothing works, the snap packages installed from the app center are broken, lots of visual bugs, when will the year of the Linux desktop arrive?

I have been using Ubuntu for 10 years. Installed it recently on a new laptop and OP is correct. The shit they put in to make things easier for normies actually just breaks everything. Maybe the snap store will eventually work, but, for now, it is a broken piece of shit.

Will never understand the hate for apt, snap and other forms are just laggy pieces of shit. dependency wise, I actually need more steps to track them down than I can manually do with apt. 22.04 might be the most broken ubuntu release with clashing philosophies. But, I tried 24.04 last week and it seems they removed most of the bullshit surprisingly enough, they were consistent. So, I believe they know what is going wrong at least.

they definitely still are but ive had less shit getting broken installing apt packages than I did in 22.04, and by less shit, I would say maybe one. Compared to half the packages in 22.04, breaking whenever I had to dpkg deb files offline.

The thing about Linux on the desktop is that it doesn't "just work." Windows just works, Mac OS just works, that's why people stick with them. Even when Windows gives you a cryptic error, you can look it up and find a solution. By contrast, when something fails on Linux there's no error window at all, the thing just silently fails and you have to run it again in a terminal to see the error output, or else you just have no way to tell what's going on. That brings me to my second point. If you have to use the terminal at all, you have an incomplete graphical user interface. If that's the way you wanna do it and it fits your workflow, go right ahead and use it, I'm not saying it's an inferior way to do things, but 99% of users out there will not use the terminal. They don't know how and learning it will seem too daunting of a task. That is why the linux desktop is not standard.

Game compatibility, Driver performance or Desktop environments, those are whole other subjects that have their own problems.

    1. Why are drivers still not good on AMD and there's still shader cache stutter in 2024 on linux

    2. Why are there no stable drivers

    3. Why is every desktop environment shit or buggy. Even KDE which is the most featured and best linux still has tons of problems. With the release of plasma 6 only more things broke, and now the years of the linux desktop seems further out of reach than before.

i decided to give the new LTS a try and holy frick is it bad.
im running it pretty much stock, all i use is dash to panel and ive had:
    - nvidia driver frickups
    - sometimes the bottom half of one of my monitors shows an orange square. it kinda looks like a selection box and is displayed on top of everything. i fiddle with window resizing and switching to get rid of it, eventually.
    - changing my mouse cursor caused an unrecoverable error on login, had to reset it via tty
    - weirdness with steam not opening, but launching a game launches steam just fine
    - the classic snap bait and switch where sudo apt install actually installs the snap version

its a whole bunch of little bullshit that adds up to a really shitty experience.

Are the spin distros (kubuntu xubuntu etc) as polished and well done as the main ubuntu or are they the shitty versions for lower people?
I don't want the lower version and I don't want gnome
Why can't they just be normal

Kubuntu and Lubuntu do not have a store or package manager capable of updating snaps so you either have to use the terminal or wait hours for the auto update thing to whine at you. They don't care to address this.

Canonical is a server company, they really don't give a frick about the desktop. that's why the GUI and Snaps suck ass. This is why no one Recommends Ubuntu for noobs anymore.

What's the use case for snap when flatpak exists

      >better sand boxing, flatpak still weakens the native sandboxing used by browsers
      >stable release bases, 10y support
      >wider scope, designed to package system components and CLI utilities
      >can package your kernel as a snap
      >fixed a lot of the system integration issues
      What sucks
      >still no custom snapcraft servers
      >automatic updates

        >automatic updates
        you can turn them off
another thing that sucks is that some packages are famously broken, e.g. Steam

This distro was on a good trajectory but has been on a slow decline since they had the wise idea of putting Amazon ads in the file manager

They backpedaled of course, but many lost faith in canonical at that moment and some of us never looked back.
