Text is easy to embed in other art forms so I don't think you can find much that's absolutely unique. But it has its strengths.
Text makes abstraction and complexity very accessible. You can say what you mean instead of e.g. trying to visualize it and hoping that you get the point across. (Maybe people will tell you to show-don't-tell but you can decide whether to listen.)
The reader can read as slowly as they want. (This also has downsides. Some other mediums have this, and video games are capable of taking this further than writing.)
You can memorize a piece of writing with full fidelity. If you like a poem you can (with a little effort) put it in your head and experience it whenever you want.
Writing is straightforward to convert to audio or braille or whatever without having to do a full adaptation. It's flexible.
Writing can be stored very compactly digitally. All the books you've ever read could fit in your pocket.

I think the sheer scope of possibilities in it, however that is true for music and painting too, so maybe the fact that writing can be much more inspiring and more powerful in the sense of changine a person's life, it's an art that aims at truth, so it is an artistic striving towards truth, so its somewhere between science and art, but it lacks the dull reductionism of science while containing its inquisitiveness for truth.
So I guess, what makes writing and reading unique is it is the best art form for knowing thyself.

A good novel gives you access to another person's mind the way no other art form can. Music has beauty, novels allow for self-transcendence and escape from the prison of the their own consciousness.

It is the art built on our primary means of communication and how we think, any abstraction is controlled and not a side effect of the medium.

TJ was very obviously the protagonist of the story from the beginning if you paid attention to the signs (Endearing to the audience, his autism made him the obvious underdog of the entire plot) and his character development (Taylor arc, Beanie Tomas, going bald, finally fighting Jimmy). They just emphasized it midway through via the out-of-character 'Attic' segments.

Writing requires the fewest materials. You just need a way to put the language you already know to something. You can chip away at a stone if you wanted. It's the most accessible because of this and it requires less effort than painting or coding an entire game or directing a movie. Many gnomes write stories in their huts because of this

I'm multi-creative as a person. I've tried most 'art forms' that you can engage with, but the 3 major ones are Art (image), Music, and Word (writing in this case). After almost 30 years of doing this stuff, I've come to the conclusion that writing is BY FAR the superior form. This is because art is about evoking emotion. If evoking emotion is to be measured and compared, you're looking at the number of emotions and intensity. Art (image) can evoke emotion, sometimes multiple emotions, but not as intensely as music, although music is limited to the number of emotions. Writing has both -- number of emotions and intensity. No other art form can evoke so many different emotions at various intensity throughout its work. It's quite unfair to compare writing to other art forms, because it blows them all out of the water.

literature (outside of some poetry) rarely evokes (strong) emotion from me. Stoner is an example of one that did. Can you recommend me some of the most powerful ones you read? Also with convincing characters?
