Because it still has to be told it has more to use.

      ok patch the firmware

even then, sometimes those bigger memory chips need more connections than what's available

          or more voltage, etc...

yeah power distribution might be an issue but I guess it depends on how much power they would draw extra.
how much power does mem suck?

you can search for the model that is printed on the memory chip, and that manufacturer usually sells chips at various sizes for the same pinout

      does it even work tho

probably with some hacked chinese driver based on some 3 year old revision

does the driver also need hacking? or just the card's firmware?

I'll bet China will do exactly that now that they can't buy graphics cards optimized for AI anymore.
Might even become an industry where they sell part of the upgraded cards on Ali Express.

      what parts? flashed bios chips?

        >flashed bios chips?
you can just download the bios. I think he means the memory modules which is what you really need (as hardware).
what cards does this shit work on? I'm very seriously considering it

        Anonymous

I meant a % of all the upgraded cards will probably be sold to westerners instead of using them all for AI in China.

that would be kino, but i think customs would shut it down quick since the big tech israelite will be afraid

    >solder the ram to the card
    >dump firmware
    >edit firmware to use a larger address array if it isn't already dynamic and just requires a single integer edit of the total available addressable bytes in vram
maybe 2 hex edits if there isn't already some gui tool out there to edit firmwares to expand address space
i'd rather have a recent amd card with more vram

would the driver needs addressing or would the stock one work for both windows/linux?
ngl it's pretty interesting if possible at least on 30 series. hacking my own GPU for increased memory so I can train my own AI and run it on it fits the bill just nice for my cyberpunk needs

Change output name as appropriate. Xorg chads only, Wayland cucks need not apply.

so it has 6 mem footprints, if they used 2GB chips.
then I suppose the 2080ti has 11 mem footprints and used 4GB mem?
would 24GB be theoretically possible on rx5600?

i dont think there is a limit

          Anonymous

I guess there is, depending on footprint and memory type. but if say it's the same memory type and footprint, it should work if you replace with largest possible? what are the largest mem chips for rx5600?

also if you're serious about desoldering bga ram and replacing, you need a prewarmer and a real heat gun
prewarmer is the most essential though

    >GDDR5X also consumes less power compared to GDDR5. GDDR5X memory chips are available in sizes of 4GB, 6GB, 8GB, and 16GB. The most popular Graphics Cards using GDDR5X memory includes GeForce GTX 1080 and Nvidia TITAN X (Pascal). High-end Workstation Graphics Cards such as Nvidia Quadro P5000 and Quadro P6000 also use high-speed GDDR5X memory.
says there's 16GB chips but think author is kinda moronic, it's 16Gb chips.
1080 has 8Gb chips, so if 16Gb chips exist then it should theoretically be possible to mod a 1080 to 16GB? or even 22GB (if PCB allows or have 1080ti)

      >mod a 1080 to 16GB
Quadro P5000 is 16GB, maybe bios from it would work?

yeah I saw GDDR6X micron chips come in 2GB capacity so theoretically you should be able to get 24GB on a 3080. but how source the fricking chips

            Anonymous

Easiest to get form broken cards that used those chips. Alternatively you can chck if there are any chinamen which found some that fell off a truck.

          3070 has only 8 memory footprints, 3080 has 12.

    https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/micron-technology-inc/MT61K512M32KPA-24-U/17631862
    digikey has 2GB GDDR6X memory modules, $20 a pop, you'd need 12 for 3080 or 8 for 3070.
mouser has them for 20 euro and I think I found the 1GB version on aliexpress for under $5 a pop.

I did find various speed flavors (I think) for MT61K512M32KPA. $8 for one if you get 5 pieces. that's under $100 for 24GB which sounds kinda very nice if working. I'd drop $100 in parts with my labor to upgrade a 3080 to 24GB, if I had one lmao

Chinks already do this with older cards like RX 580.

i would assume that the driver software on the computer wouldnt recoognise them or if it did it wouldnt use them
