        >which are pretty standard for computer vision
I think they will or have already started to go away, ViT-based is the new state of the art like detr, and the PVRs are mostly Transformers based to my knowledge, but CNN still has some capital for now
not saying his work sucks, just that Transformers kind of smashes up everything else

          Anonymous

          >just that Transformers kind of smashes up everything else

it depends on the work. transformes are computationally more exhaustive, take longer to train and require more data . so are not a wise choice for real-time process of high-res images (like those from a camera of a self driving car)

            Anonymous

do you mean that they are more expensive?
at least for language they require much less compute to beat state of the art, that was part of their result that made that study so groundbreaking, wreck the previous sota on half a week and a few GPUs of training
if that doesn't hold for vision: interesting, but I would like to see the evidence please

            Anonymous

no. i mean they are computationally more demanding than CNNs. cnns have better inference time and are probabbly more parallizable. hence, why they would be better for real-time processing.

            Anonymous

Transformers is also parallelisable, they don't use recurrence, that's part of why it was such a big deal

I am currently working on a paper, the results of a model that's fully convolutional with 5M parameters is easily beaten by a model with half of its size with transformers within the model. the catch is that the model with only convolution was much easier to train and I didn't have any problems with memory usage unlike the models with the transformers that would have taken me 6 times the resources to run, bear in mind that I have also edited the attention modules to be more efficient or else the transformers wouldn't be able to run at all with the hardware available to me

what was easier about the training?

Tesla rewrote their entire self-drive architecture into transformers in 2021 and they have been relying on full vision for a couple years now. They did not enough data available to do the move earlier, now they do so they have fully end to end system with humans out of the loop in training.

good to know, that directly answers the point of whether Musk is being moronic (with this new info, no he isn't) rather than us speculating about it, though I'm still interested to talk CNNs vs. ViT

hard to say what he means by that, could be that they still use it for research but not much in production, it is only a tweet we have to go off
either way, that is a nitpick, we have answered how they drive their self-driving cars real time without CNNs, that waas the question of interest

When you're the leader, you have to experiment/do your secret sauce mix. When you're catching up, you take whats out there and see where they get you.

Leaders have to do their own research. They're investing billions into their project for a reason

leader is self-driving cars but not a leader in AI models or machine vision, he can use the work of leaders in those fields (like Meta, which is somewhat unique in how open it is in its R&D) and he most likely does

Nonsense. Youre confusing academic research some tech companies have vs actual product for which research is actively done but without papers published.

            I don't think I am
there are AI companies with secret sauce models for sure (OpenAI is the obvious one), but their line of products is AI models that they can make available to other companies
Tesla does not produce models that it sells to other companies, so I don't really think it's the same
of course they have advances in self driving cars that they aren't openly sharing because that is their product, I don't deny that part, but why not leach the parts they can and save their research efforts for their specialisation?

            >why not leach the parts they can and save their research efforts for their specialisation?

Ever sat down in a science class room and hear stories about all the brave and cool scientists who did science only to have their work discredited only for them to later be proven right in the system works sort of way?

that wasnt the system working, that was the establishment, also known as academia, rejecting a true position becuase it would not financially and socially benefit them. they then posthumously honor the correct position after it becomes profitable. Science is driven by radicals. Peer reviewers are there only to ensure the establishment doesn't take losses. There is basically zero point in stopping quackery. Just look at the modern WHO and all these corporate paypigged 70% unreproducable on average studies such as P&G's hitpiece on saturated fat.

The idea that science has entered a golden age where this doesn't happen to smart people anymore is a fricking lie. We didn't suddenly grow smarter and stopped putting cadmium and lead into things because we are more informed. they just came up with new fads.

When you become an adult, you should've learned that you can't achieve anything alone. Science is a common goal, you need everyone to participate and your own work relies on the works of other people.
Saying publishing isn't necessary is like borrowing the knowledge of other people and not sharing your own. You contribute nothing to science this way.

Are you guys claiming that the alchemists were scientists because they invented things? Science means using the scientific method, key components of which are reporting and reviewing findings. We can certainly debate the usefulness of science if you want; personally, I'm of the mind that it's of dubious value since there isn't really anything to suggest that the rate of acceleration of technical development increased after the development of the scientific method, and most people claiming to be scientists or fans of science or whatever the frick are actually closer to alchemists than scientists. With that said, Yann was clearly in the right here.

        alchemists were scientists.
The scientific method has existed in some form since before alchemy.
public alchemists required themselves to not be incompetent and share because it could get people including themselves killed.

            >Alchemy is essentially chemistry.
Alchemy is independent from chemistry, although many of the inventions of alchemists were foundational in the development of chemistry.

            >Technology is making stupid gadgets and gizmos to sell to morons.
There's lots of technology that doesn't involve gadgets or gizmos. Despite what this board would have you believe, there's much more to technology than cell phones and vidya cards.

it's pretty obvious what Yann meant
science requires peer review, that can be as simple as just announcing you did something and showing your methods so others can reproduce and pick apart the results
if you never publish your results and methods, it isn't science, it's probably just product (like a technical report isn't science)
as for alchemy, alchemy can be a science if you use the scientific method, most alchemists did not - mainly, they didn't draw their conclusions from testing and experimentation but rather assumptions that whatever formulae they conjured up did what they expected it should do based on its effects
a typical alchemist would assume for instance that some mixture would, say, corrode your lungs if they saw that it rusted metal

            Anonymous

It isn't required however it's GENERALLY accepted that independent peer review of published findings happens before it is accepted by the community.

            >At that point it's not alchemy but chemistry.
if you have an extremely poor understanding of what alchemy is (raw dumb propaganda in fact) then you can imagine that alchemy (divine chemistry) is less than chemistry
lets go to principles right away
in alchemy, the subject (the experimenter, the practitioner, the artist as alchemy is an art, not a science nor a technique indeed) and the object (the matter he works upon, and is worked upon by) make one. That's the point and the goal of alchemy: unity. Alchemy is the quest for unity. As byproducts, it produces trifles like gold and the elixir of life (immortality). But once you are one with everything, you dont need gold nor immortality.
            See the difference?
I guess not. Not being an alchemist myself, i'm bad at teaching it.
But you guys are lost in anti truth anti life anti reality lies.
science is a method that at best produces predictive models, not knowledge.
alchemy is just a core part of magic
and in magic, limits are spiritual

Except that it did. Unless you date scientific method as far back as possible when it wasn't popular and there's no paradigms like steam power, electricity, and computers to work with. Centuries and centuries were just blacksmithing, candles, gunpowder and shit. 1800s got interesting and then it absolutely fricking exploded in the 1900s. If you're going to troll at least make a softer argument that it did advance rapidly but science didn't have anything to do with it. I mean good luck trying to engineer anything when you don't understand physics.

Like; as opposed to being "Mr Moneybags" and hiring some big brains to do all his thinking for him, creating some sort of pseudo-dynasty, he's taking the route of actually fitting in where his interests lie, and authentically being in the communities he has investnments in. I never really noticed others actually doing this, even though it's common success advice. I'm saying this after a separate thread last night, about that cash offer contest

elon is the world's richest wannabe. seems like he is actually fairly intelligent, but, not smart enough to design complex things on his own. more than money, he wants clout. he wants people to like him and want to be around him. he is genuinely trying to fit in with smart people on twitter, but its like a elementary student trying to fit in a linear algebra class when it comes down to brass tacks.

think about his purchase of twitter. purely driven by ego, he likely thought if he buys the platform, de-censors certain people, than those people will like him and he will be their hero.

the praise and attention are like a drug to him, combined with the actual drugs he takes (ketamine), its entertaining to watch his progression towards doom.

The thing is that elon is a surface level troll with surface level knowledge of the things he's criticizing. Like CNNs, they power literally all of his self-driving cars and he's so narcissistic and stupid that he's attacking the creator of them. He's a huge poser that got insanely lucky with Tesla giving him leeway on pay packages.

elon is the world's richest wannabe. seems like he is actually fairly intelligent, but, not smart enough to design complex things on his own. more than money, he wants clout. he wants people to like him and want to be around him. he is genuinely trying to fit in with smart people on twitter, but its like a elementary student trying to fit in a linear algebra class when it comes down to brass tacks.

think about his purchase of twitter. purely driven by ego, he likely thought if he buys the platform, de-censors certain people, than those people will like him and he will be their hero.

the praise and attention are like a drug to him, combined with the actual drugs he takes (ketamine), its entertaining to watch his progression towards doom.

This. He's blowing huge money on AI but if you check Grok it's a /misc/tard conspiracy spewing piece of shit compared to big boy LLMs. Literally trained on the dregs of humanity (twitter and pol users).

So he's, comparatively, Yeezy in a different industry. Entertaining, very funny. How this affects the landscape of tech might be, more of a cultural shift. It'll be annoying at the least, if the image that manager-wannabes look up to is tropic to being like musk or something. That seems like a problem that never really goes away though and, arguably; is a non-issue. There'd be more of a crisis, if jerks really ruled the world. It'd be adrupt and blunt; not this slow ache of a crisis, where every day, a few complaints about how malcontentive the internet is here-and-there leak in.

It would be great if this conversation were a bit longer given whon those two people are but, I even get a impression that lecun waltzed into the conversation, expecting elon's ego to bite him or something. This shit about filter bubbles is realer of a threat that privacy, and the shit is malicious.

I could believe Tesla are deprecating CNNs. CNNs are great at rushing to 90% of a solution, but that last 10% is a doozy and you'll spend years either fruitlessly tweaking your AI to grind out an extra percentage point or two, or you start grafting on traditional deterministic computer vision to fix the errors. Eventually your conventional computing becomes 90% of the codebase and you get ready to bin the convolutional part entirely.
Put another way, regulations are the HARD bit of any big job that involves human lives. How likely do you think you'll get regulators to sign off on a black box neural net that nobody really understands how or why it works vs. an annotated source printout with each function fully documented with inputs and outputs and expected errors and so on? If Tesla ever wants autonomous self driving that isn't just a legal bomb waiting to go off, they'll be phasing out their CNNs.

Really, if you're afraid of being ashamed, then you dont have what it takes to become the leader of multiple companies.

You may believe this is a "win" for LeCun because he created the CNN and Musk's company uses it. And you may believe Musk is shameless and cringe here, but there's an equal an opposite narrative spun. 1) Tesla may have changed their internal code 2) Who's more shameless? The so called "respected scientist" guy who calls for death of a CEO who he's arguing for or a CEO who engages in debate publicly?
