I'm glad that someone's obsessed with ultima IX as I am.
I often dream about this game.

Some of my earliest video game memories was borrowing Ultima I-V from the library back in the 80s. I never really got into games until the 90s with Darkseed, Return to Zork, Myst, Journeyman Project and such and my gaming ended there as well, games got too caught up in trying to be more real and better graphics and stopped working on developing story, the magic was lost.

Darkseed, Return to Zork, Myst, Journeyman Project are examples of this too, real soul is Space Invaders and Pac-Man.

Man I miss playing these old rpgs when I was a kid. None of the new rpgs I've played as an adult had the same magic.

I feel ya, I grew up playing the Ultima games and they shaped my love for CRPGs. Only the original Baldur's Gate saga inspired me the same sense of wonder.

Such a fricking shame what happened to ultima. I heard the guy who created ultima wanted to created a spiritual successor a couple of years ago. Did that shit was any good?

It basically ended up being a quasi-scam MMORPG (as it was funded through pre-development individual donations from the public, initially through Kickstarter) and the garbage product that was eventually released failed to meet many, many of the promises and goals laid out to receive its mountain of funding, as well as just being outright awful putting those aside. There's some great articles and YouTube videos available on the whole debacle that you should check out if you wanna learn more about it.

After that he tried to make an NFT-based MMO called Iron & Magic. But it looks like it was abandoned a few months after it was announced in 2022. And he even sold the website to some malware redirect thing which the Twitter and Facebook page for the game are inadvertently advertising for. Pretty sad.

Video games are art and superior to literature

Unironically. Most of the video games right now suffer from a very bad case of form over content. I don't think I've ever played a game that had a genuinely great story by literature standards.

I loved video games as a kid and I thought imma be a gamer till I die, my older cousin told me that he used to play video games, but he grew out of them in his late teens and barely plays anymore, and that I probably will grow out of them too. Turns out, he was right, right after I discovered literature and movies I've realized that games don't really have that much to offer.

I remember when I was playing RPGs like Fallout or VTMB I just couldn't wait until games are going to become more immersive and what will the future bring to the table, and turns out games peaked around 15 years ago and there's been little to no innovation, just more corporate slop is getting constantly released.

Also, yeah, only manchildren and autists (trannies) play video games, you really gotta be moronic or stuck in your ways not to realize in the first 30 years of your life that games are actually pretty fricking garbage and soulless products written with ESG in mind in most cases.

Frank Herbert's son's contributions to the Dune series. Like Ultima IX (and sometimes VIII), they are deliberately avoided by the series' fans.
