Show me a CPU from 3 years ago that matches M3's performance per power usage

x64 is and always was about performance, not efficiency.

        >per power usage
that's great for a laptop, useless for anything else. i have solar panels and live in a country that sets things on fire when it gets over 40c. electricity usage isn't a concern.

          >laptops don't matter
Also, low power usage helps with keeping the overall device small. I'm sure you also don't care about that, but others do.

We don't need smaller/thinner laptops. They are so thin already that even with the magical chip they have issues with cooling.

And yes, it's good for laptops, until you need to execute any of the billions of programs with x86_64 in mind.

Which is why we need an x64 equivalent...

Name five that aren't games which don't run on arm64 and also don't run well via Rosetta 2.

We do need smaller desktops though. They’ve been getting moronicly large as of late.

        threadripper and shit

AMD is "ackshually" even more power efficient than appleshit. Especially if you account for the instruction set.

nowhere? trends clearly indicate we going ARM now for everything portable.

the amd 7840u is close enough to the M2 Pro/M3 base, you'll get maybe 12hr of battery life instead of 20hr of the mac but who care you need to rest at some point bro

We won't know for certain until a gorrillion openbenchmark results get published. On average we do know that for absolute certain that the Apple M2 is on par with a 6-core Zen 2 laptop AMD64 CPU. The apple M3 might be able to compete with a 5600G but I really doubt it will compete with a 7840u. No clue about the pro chips though.

      ARM is a joke.

That's only because M3 hasn't reached the Mac Mini or Mac Studio yet, so you either have to buy it in laptop form or with an expensive built-in display for the iMac.

M3 Pro Mini with 16 GB of RAM will probably be about $1200.

$200 8700G will probably be out by then. AMD is kind of moronic tbh, if they would have released that first it would have made Apple look 100X worse.

The M3 Mac Minis will probably be out by like March or April. I don't think AMD's gonna drop the price of the 8700G that quickly.

In the datacenter, actually doing useful work. M3 can stay in the coffee shop, where it belongs.

    >inb4 8GB RAM is good enough
LOLNO it isn't, apple should be deeply ashamed for offering such anemic specs on their "premium" computers used by gays in starbucks to pretend to be computer programmers writing HTML code middle schoolers could 20 years ago.

They should be ashamed to charge such ridiculous prices for the upgrades. You can buy a bucket full of M.2 drives for the price of a 2TB upgrade.
