You do know streaming services compress the hell of of content right? Not to mention episodes being removed because Netflix doesn't think you should be allowed to watch them (https://www.thewrap.com/community-advanced-dungeons-and-dragons-episode-removed-netflix-blackface/)

yes, its totally crazy to want to OWN something that is not subject to being removed from your access at any moment. Like netflix, prime, hulu, and every other streaming company does. "Leaving soon!". last time i checked, i have had no discs 'leave soon' from my shelf.

Yes, drives with copy protection won't allow you to read the entire disc if it detects copy protection.
LibreDrive devices don't have this protection or have it removed through a firmware mod.

Doesn't matter if you have a flashed libredrive. I've ripped 4k blurays on an amd ryzen cpu as well as a Haswell cpu. Its fine.

Uh wouldn't it be way easier to just I dunno go to torrent site of choice and get your 4k rips that way? Unless your movies are super rare you should be able to get torrent of it easy.

      Anonymous

Yea, basically every UHD release is getting ripped and put on trackers, there is no real point to buying discs and ripping them yourself unless you REALLY want the physical collection.

And even then, i'd recommend buying the discs and downloading the remux from online, as it's easier and faster than ripping it yourself in most cases, even if you own the disc.

        Anonymous

benefit of buying and ripping is you don't get a re-encode, plus you get the movie on every platform apple supports for free with the movies anywhere -> itunes transfer

          Anonymous

What do you think a remux is?

And again, if you own the disc and download the remux, you still have the disc for legal movies anywhere rights.

        >is getting ripped and put on trackers
Are those true 1:1 rips or just some "UHD" rips with worse bitrate with Youtubr?

          Anonymous

Both, usually there is a re-encode and a 1:1 remux.

          Anonymous

I can get M2TS disc images, full bitrate untouched remuxes, or compressed (but transparent) encodes.

Disc images are a pain to deal with, a remux is literally just the audio and video files from the disc muxed into an MKV container with no DRM. So that's my go-to as you get the highest quality audio/video with no extras (like disc menus and shit that just takes up space).

4k disc drm makes the discs impossible to play in a pc, unless you have a few specific intel processors, I believe its 9 series ones.

You literally rip/decrypt the disc with something like MakeMKV and then play with MPV, VLC, MPC-HC, etc. Never heard of anyone having issues due to the processor.

Oh I have one, it doesn't work, because I don't have the right processor. It literrally comes with software to scan your system and tell you weather or not it will work, and it wont, on every processor thats not that Intel, do you think Intel doesn't know weather their own shit works? Its why only a couple of them ever got made, because Intel dropped support. But if you want to prove me wrong, buy it and see what happens.

You're clearly a troll. I've used 2 AMD CPUs and an Intel CPU and have no problem with playing back movies. There are zero reports on MakeMKV's forums either about CPU incompatibility with playback. There is never a reason to install any software that comes with a disc drive.

I've had one since 2015 but I haven't used it in years.

I think it still has the old firmware still on it too, so I wouldn't have to frick around with flashing it.
