      George Washington

      Washington

I'm an American chauvinist and Washington isn't even top 10. Lee, Eisenhower, Grant, Patton, MacArthur, Pershing, even Schwarzkopf were better.

Top 3 all time have to be
      1.) Napoleon
      2.) Alexander
      3.) Julius Caesar

        >Pershing

Made an almost suicidal charge against the Germans when he could have outflanked them

        >MacArthur

Washington being a bad general is a fricking meme
        >B-but he lost so many batt-
He retreated before his ragtag group of American farmboys could be slaughtered wholesale from battles they had no hope of winning against a far more professional force, and only continued engagements that they clearly had the upper hand in. His strategic decision making was fricking S-tier to anybody that's actually bothered to study the course of the American Revolution and without his actions the Revolution likely would have been snuffed out in its fricking crib.

For all times and all places, Napoleon, Alexander, and Hannibal are too close to call.
For what a general is regarding tactical ability, Robert E Lee.
For generalized ability - Caesar and Frederick the Great
Honorable mention to Timur whom had life been more generous could have proven to be one of the greatest. China has decent tacticians during the three kingdoms cycle but some of their feats could be made up.

Washington wasn't a god on the battlefield but the sheer level of charisma and dedication Washington could draw out of his troops is amazing. If the Congress really did put Hanwiener or Lee or somebody over it instead of Washington the entire revolution would've collapsed.

He wasn't even in the top 3 best military commanders of the second half of the 18th century
He was a god-tier president though

There's no way anyone could have come up with making a surprise attack on the Hessians by crossing the Delaware River.

Washington was definitely part of the top ten American generals if not the top five

Robert E Lee because his career began in his 50s while no other general in history that age consistently defeated younger generals while also outnumbered and with inferior troops
Even Old Man Caesar had the advantage of veteran legions.

Napoleon. He fought the most battles for the longest time. He fought opponents on par technologically and frequently outnumbered. Nobody stacks up to him.

Also Frederick the Great. Would have been interesting to see the two go at it if their time periods lined up. Napoleon owes a decent amount to the military reforms Frederick set in motion.

    1. Subutai - Made Genghis Khan's dream possible
    2. Napoleon - went head to head against great generals from the day one and he worked his way up the ranks until he became a nearly unstoppable emperor until his own success overwhelmed him
    3. Frederick the Great - Basically singlehandedly held off the whole of Europe alone. One of the first modern military theorists
    4. Hannibal - did more with less. audacious. the king of pulling out victory from the jaws of defeat with the odds stacked against him.
    5. Oda Nobunaga - Innovatively used new technology culminating in the Battle of Nagashino. France and Rome had centuries of skilled logisticians developing the methods and skills to supply armies on the campaign over massive distances. Nobunaga almost had to invent that all from scratch.
