True. Real computer user is supposed to spend most of his time in the terminal fixing issues with sound, video drivers, disk mounting, dependencies, changing myriad of different different configurations and reimplementing well known tools in C for a millionth time. Now that's a real computing.

          * eventually you just want things to work and not have to spend hours messing with crap. It takes me about 4 hours to tune in a new Windows install. It takes me easily 10 times that much for any Linux install, and that's just the initial hell. I got shit to do, screw that.

This. All the shitty failed attempts to bring normalgays into Linux so far have brought appimages, snap, and flatpak. Imagine what actual mass adoption would bring.

I myself was brought in about 5 years ago, and in many ways i am supporting the degradation of linux, for example I don't really mind systemd and have made no effort to try to figure out how alternative components work and why the monolithic approach is bad, because I simply don't care.

The weirdest part of the Windows vs. Linux thing is the insistence that Windows is bug free. Or the idea that Linux updates are constantly breaking things. And even if that were true, it's ignoring all the fricking times Microsoft has pushed out updates that break shit.

I have many times. Can't even delete an EFI partition on a USB without Command Prompt on this shit. A few months back I installed 7 on a desktop I built out of "scrap" (3770k 1060 3gb I had it all laying around) and it installed the bootloader onto the MBR a different drive from the boot drive. I have weirder stories about the Windows installer. I had to spend hours figuring out how to write it onto the boot SSD instead all though cmd.

With Linux, you are never truly in control of your own computer, because packaging systems (the "intended" way to install software) put you in bondage to the internet and to maintainers.

you know what else took me 15 minutes years ago? installing a Linux distro with everything working. meanwhile Windows needs double that time to install, then you have to go through the humiliation ritual account creation and question answering, install your drivers, download your program installers, install your programs, restart your machine so that your drivers and programs work, install 3 Windows updates in the process. with Linux once your system is installed (at this point Windows is still installing), you install your software with a single command line, maybe reboot once if you have a kernel update, and you're done

The problem with Linux is that no matter what you do, it will simply never ever be pleasant to use, or make you feel like you're really in control of your own computer.
A Linux install is a fragile thing. Ubuntu is probably the most usable of all distros, and yet upgrades from 22.04 to 24.04 usually result in a bricked install.
A few months ago, I upgraded Debian, which broke nvidia drivers.
I had to directly edit power management files to prevent my computer from instantly going to sleep because it's docked with the screen closed.
I have to manually enable low energy mode for Bluetooth so I can connect a cheap shitty chinese controller.
And after multiple instances of data loss, I have to manually sync after copying items to a thumb drive, to ensure that the copying is actually finished (though the UI tells me the task finished).
    Etc, etc.

This is all very tedious crap, for very basic things, that someone who isn't technologically inclined like me and who just wants to play his video games would not be able to do.
Linux is for servers... for desktops, it's like living in your car. Yes, it has a roof and a floor and walls. And you could probably make do with it. But why go through the tedium?

Your intellectual inferiority is on full display.
With Linux, you are never truly in control of your own computer, because packaging systems (the "intended" way to install software) put you in bondage to the internet and to maintainers.
If you use Linux, you are basically software cucked. Sorry.
        >B-b-buh I can install a deb/rpm
You will need dependencies. And it will not work on newer distributions once outdated.
        >B-b-buh I can compile from source
        See above.
        >B-b-b-buh! MUB FLATPAKS
Not provided by all software developers.
        Requires flatpak.
        >WHAT ABOUT MUH APPIMAGES! MUH PRECOMPILED BINARIES!!!
Close enough... But only provided by a minority of software makers.
        And, they still require dependencies.

Quit trying, kid... I'm running intellectual laps around you

I love this absolute non-argument, as if Wingays are still getting their software on shrink-wrapped CDs from Best Buy.
Modern Windows has like three competing Linux-esque package managers, dude. I even use one on my Windows machine because, surprise surprise, it's extremely convenient. Stop pretending Windows is some kind of escape from evil distro janny hell. No one is buying it.

I use it because I like the community around it and it is literally a hobby os, an os I use as a hobby. Also for me I rarely run into issues unless its with wine, which makes sense. With the basic os itself i've used many distros painlessly.

What i like about linux is the community and collectivist yet libertarian nature of it. Not profit driven for many distros and profit certainly has a lesser role compared to something like windows or mac. Everything always has to be a product and always has to be monitiized, with capitalism there is no free lunch and everything comes with strings attached. With linux, its simple by comparison. It is the ideal operating system for libertarian leftists.

I use windows, but I have a linux VM I use for dev work. When I'm not programming and want to play video games I use windows as I can't use certain anti-cheats on linux and could get banned if I decided to use a windows VM to bypass it.

I like Linux, but...one critical and very niche software for my work REQUIRES windows, with no known alternatives existing.
No, wine does not work with it.
It's simply not viable to dual-boot just to use that 1 software.
But...might have to switch to linux if microsoft keeps adding intrusive functions no one asked, as tedious as that might make my work.

Not just that it also solves none of the problems with Windows, e.g. ~~*telemetry*~~ and them firing the entire QA team.
With dual booting you get the worst of both worlds and some additional bullshit on top that you wouldn't have to deal with if you only installed either Windows or Linux.

One area where linux fails. Mod creation tools for games. I make mods, I've made mods downloaded millions of times. I'm not just some /v gay either. I've made 30K off these mods in 2 years without even trying. Many of the mod kits run like shit on linux, not to mention other obscure tools that have no linux equivalent. Krita is only 80% functional. I need a device for digital art and CSP doesn't work with Proton as far as i know. I also heard a lot of games with a DRM or Anti Cheat don't work either.

And then there simply is no culture of using the terminal anymore. The command line is an objectively inferior interface method and normal people don't even know what it is
    >Nooo not my hecking terminarino
Shut the frick up, YES IT IS INFERIOR. The terminal lacks EXPLORABILITY, you cannot look around the menu and see al possible options to figure out what you need you are supposed to know the command and you can only know that command by reading a book before you start using it or googling it and copy pasting the terminal commands from stack overflow. I know you fricking do it too.

Cooking your own food is objectively inferior.
      >noo not my heckin cooking, it saves money and is a useful skill
Shut the frick up, YES IT IS INFERIOR. cooking lacks DISCOVERABILITY. you cannot just read a pre-made menu and select an option that sounds good. you are supposed to instead "just know" what kind of ingredients won't kill you or taste bad together, and you're just supposed to know (or look it up and read! lmao! in 2024!!!) how to cook them all properly. and don't lie to me, if you say (a lie) that you cook, i know you're just copy and pasting recipes from allrecipes and trying shit randomly. i know you fricking do it. you have no understanding of how food goes together because it's literally impossible. you NEED a menu of food that someone else will prepare, there's simply no other way to eat. cooking is only 50% functional.

      >Why hasn't Linux become idiiot proof
show me an idiot proof system and i will always find you a bigger idiot. what level of idiocy are you catering to here? installing linux is already just clicking "next" like 12 times in a row. how the frick more idiot proof can you make that? installing windows is basically the exact same process:
      >insert media (both windows and linux)
      >boot from it (both windows and linux)
      >select drive to install on (both windows and linux)
      >sign into your microshit account so the install can continue (windows only)
      >wait for the installation to finish (both windows and linux)

at least with linux you don't need to use some stupid spyware account or disconnect your internet just to install the fricking OS. genuinely curious which part of this process they could possibly make easier.

Actually there is a successful Linux operating system that's used by a large section of the market.

      It's called Android.
      >complete GUI experience, no need for a shell script to enable your earbuds
      >the display server isn't fighting against the desktop environment
      >no hardware conflicts
      >Samsung paid the developers to make a CSP port and it works flawlessly

The core problem of Linux is that it's developed without any centralized oversight or a plan, each team pulls in a different direction and the cart isn't going anywhere. If a company with money seriously invested into it they could develop an os with a display server and a functioning DE, then pay Adobe to port Photoshop for it, then everything would be fine and dandy, the year of Linux desktop would actually come.

Maybe an organized nonprofit or something like that. I don't trust companies doing anything with linux because companies are how we ended up with Windows in the first place. The nature of profit driven development will be a double edged sword. I'm satisfied with where Linux is now.

        This.

I dabble in graphic design and as much as I like FoSS and GIMP's concept, Photoshop humiliates GIMP. GIMP is made by coders who make graphic design software, Photoshop is a program made for graphic designers by graphic designers who shadow coders and tell them exactly what to do.

If you want your FoSS project to work you need to get your shit together like Blender and OpenOffice. Get a team with a strong vision and oversee the project. Programmer grogs meanwhile expect people to be mind readers for how their programs work.

Why does Linux even need more normalgays? Anything invaded by normies turn to shit, if Linux had mass adoption then you’d have people asking for it to be dumbed down even more and then they’d be asking for stuff that made windows so zogged in the first place. These people like being cucked by big corpos. If they didint they’d have switched already.

People should be less pushy on what oses they use and just use what they prefer and what fits their needs. I personally use a combination of windows and linux, thats just what works for me. If someone else needs Mac to fit their purposes, good for them.

Linux certainly has its shortcomings, but I believe that there's some good stuff to be found in it.

Just think like a IQfy user
    "whats the use case?"

There is none, which is why Linux use is shrinking. Its only going to get worse with windows continuing to implement Linux into windows, now you dont even need to install Linux at all!! Just use WSL!
    Isnt that wonderful. 🙂
Now those "normies" can stay right in there lane while the only real competition dies in a soggy ditch with its code used and raped by the same corporation you fight because its creator is a moron.

I used linux for like 8 months and i concluded that its not suitable for any type of serious desktop work or gaming. I learned the whole command line, how to use bash, install programs, everything.

The problem is not that its hard to use. It's actually very easy. It's just so much more limited than a windows system in what you can do on it because of the lack of software support and mature desktop environments.

The only thing i think linux does better than Windows is programming and command line usage. Batch and Powershell are just utter shit, but you never have to use them 99% of the time anyway.
