      They're the most economical form of fiction. Those who appreciate literature appreciate the short story.

      Short stories are for structurelets. The freedom from structure allows for some interesting things but severely limits other things, its a wash.

      I don't know, when short stories have chapters, it's hard to make that kind of judgement. I'm not some moron that thinks length has no sway on structure, but the shorter fiction formats are not all created equal. I like how tight a half decent short story has to be, where a novel rarely is or shouldn't be. Novellas are an odd territory.

        kek. I never said short stories never have structure, just that they are freed from the constraints of structure. You don't actually know what structure is. The difference between short story, novella and novel is ultimately their relation to structure and there is nothing weird about it.

            kek. Structure refers to an underlying literary device which the narrative is built on, Short stories can completely ignore this, novels rely on it, novellas can be vague about it. It is all built off of the readers reliance on patterns and being able to find patterns. The reader does not require patterns over 20 pages, over 200 it becomes fairly import, over 2000 pages it is critical.

            So you think a book can be completely random and have nothing to suggest something more? Plot again being the obvious example. It provides that pattern, the main character searching for something is a pattern, everything they do is repeating their search; the mystery novel.

            Structure is generally not what a novel is known for, more about the purpose of the structure. Houses are generally not know for their structure, no one cares as long as it does its job and are more concerned about the style but the style could not exist without a structure and structure has influence over style, you can't build a 110 story sky scraper with 2x4s.

      Terminology is very messed up in this area (as in many areas in English). Northrop Frye in Anatomy of Criticism starts off by ranting about this e.g. how bad it is that there is no one all-embracing word for a literary work. "Book" and "story" both mean other things. "Work" is too vague.

      The worst offender I know of in the "too-long-to-be-a-short-story-but-let's-call-it-one-anyway" is The Bear by William Faulkner, which is over 100 pages. Having said that, it doesn't feel right to call it a novella either. Word count isn't all that matters. If something is very unified it's more like a short story. If it has more progression, or more parts, it feels more like a novella. I think "long short story" can overlap with novella on word count. (Perhaps not up to 100 pages though.)

      It's tricky. For example, The Red Badge of Courage is very unified; much more so than The Bear. But it still gets called a novel (or novella), just on length. (It's 55,000 words. The Bear is about 40,000.)

        Talking about "worst offenders", I remember Jonathan Bowden said in one of his ranting lectures that he knew after Chapter One of The Shining that the hotel was evil and was going to eat the guy; the whole book felt like a very bloated short story. That struck me as quite perceptive. All the SK novels I've read have been like that — they would make much better (long) short stories.

        A random thought: are there certain lengths which work best for books (obviously quite fuzzily defined) or is it a completely continuous spectrum? Other art forms tend to find certain natural sizes that work. (Films coalesce around the two hour mark. Pop songs tend to be about three minutes.)

        I think the traditional 250-ish pages is a good comfortable length for a novel. Five pages feels right for a short story; twenty pages is right for a long short story. But 100 pages always feels a bit in-between for me.

        Maybe that's just a question of familiarity? There aren't so many 100-page works. Or maybe 100 pages feels awkward for the simple practical reason that it invites you to read it in a sitting but it's a little bit too long to do that comfortably? That would suggest what the right "natural" lengths are for stories:
        — Read it in a sitting
        — Read it in two or three sittings, but in a single day
        — Read it over several days, but without reading anything else in between sessions
        — Read it over a long period, with perhaps other things in between

        Novellas are an interesting development as it's both a genre historically, and currently, an arbitrary page count by exception. Without getting into the prescriptions of the g*rman novella, I would say that a novella has the concerns of the novel, but is tightly focused on a singular theme or subject.The format influenced the short story, but yeah I see what you mean about mid-length fiction not being a novella.
