Nice cope. They could have hired actual Greeks or Balkan folk yet did not. It was made in the fricking 60s. Euro actors or people of ethnic descent from those areas were not hard to find or hire. to factor in. Clropatra (1963) was really not an accurate film historically. Zulu, made a year later actually embellished a ton of the events and made the movie version of the people who fought in the film wildly different from their IRL counterparts. By wildly I mean grievous slander. It's the combination of the issues that make such films such a shit show.

Blackhawk Down is a more recent film that embellished events for flare and made up "villains".

I like the actor but it all comes down to swapping races of historical characters for no other reason then to bait and appeal to a "woke" agenda. Its the same as the Cleopatra shit. Race-swapping for an appeal to minority communities. It feels disingenuous to both sides. If you want to cast an African-American and have a show be based in history, just fricking do any of the many historical figures that fit the category.

Imagine if a white guy played Mansa Musa or some shit, everyone would throw a fit. Its damaging to everyone, the only one benefiting are a minority of historical revisionist that want more "Black Power", while neglecting actually African figures in history.

Historically speaking it was, there was even a law about it, the Naturalization Act of 1790. For about 40 years it was also officially a NWE Protestant country thanks to picrel. Which really shows in movie casting during that time period as others have noted.

They were there but officially whites (particularly NWE Protestants) were prioritized for citizenship (see the aforementioned laws) and were also 80 percent of the population, particularly outside the Black Belt and the Rio Grande basin.

Back to the subject at hand, it explains why Hollywood in those years would primarily cast NWE actors: the same reason that the Chinese movie industry would cast Han actors today.

Yes, but they are all Arabian accounts written by fellows who had never seen the man or his kingdom. I suppose I am putting you down a rabbit hole here, but you can go read the information we have about Mansa Musa yourself and apply that inactive critical part of your brain

            >While in Cairo during his hajj, Musa befriended officials such as Ibn Amir Hajib, who learned about him and his country from him and later passed on that information to historians such as Al-Umari.[18] Additional information comes from two 17th-century manuscripts written in Timbuktu, the Tarikh Ibn al-Mukhtar[d] and the Tarikh al-Sudan. Oral tradition, as performed by the jeliw (sg jeli), also known as griots, includes relatively little information about Musa compared to some other parts of the history of Mali.

So he was seen, heard, talked to, had many witness accounts describe their tine talking to him. All if that written down by People in Egyot and as well as his existence/deeds written down in Mali.

Yet we have "little info" on him.

Because we have more than enough accounts to say that yes he did exist and yes he did do those things with the writing to show for it. The only hard part was determining his exact date of death but we can say it was about around 1377.

Lebanese guy here, because the chances of someone with Hannibal's background looking like Denzel (great actor though) is less than 1%. Hannibal's mother is unknown, but even if Hannibal had SSA blood, he would hardly look like an african-american griffe like Denzel, he's also too old to play this role, just try to picture a 69 year old man playing Hannibal crossing the Alps... when he was in his late 20s.

I would probably cast a wog actor like pic related and call it a day, but Denzel's name certainly draws more attention.

It doesn't mean shit, so is Jason Mantzoukas who looks borderline Indian. Several modern Greeks don't pass for white (even with 20% Slav introgression), I don't even want to imagine what Cleopatra looked like with a Greek baseline plus Sogdian admixture instead.
