Exactly. It is your choice whether you replace devices immediately.
most people will just naturally replace devices over time.

But my devices won't suddenly all self-destruct at the same time. (to my knowledge, planned obsolescense is a hell of a drug). I'll have a period of unknown years when I'll have to bring both types of cable and keep thinking was that the new or old connector

glad we agree. you have a problem with moving on, not with usb-c being inferior to micro usb

            >they could have choosen a different connector for running a dozen different interfaces
            And what does this change?
In any way, you end up with one connector that runs multiple interfaces and you don't know what supports what.

The only safe bet is the lightning symbol. If it has that, i know that it supports thunderbolt.
Do you enjoy checking for symbols? I don't. A different shaped connector would be more convenient.
And even then i don't know what thunderbolt version it is.

It might come as a shock to you but multiple interfaces/protocol over a medium/connector is a thing since forever.

            Anonymous

            >it was a thing forever!
A miniUSB cable worked with any miniUSB device and fully supported it.
A microUSB cable only ever refused to fast-charge in the late years of it, but would still normally charge and support everything else.
A perfectly fine current-year USB-C cable can refuse completely ("slow charge" mode is worthless) because it does not support the right interface.

If you don't see an obvious trend here, you can't be helped.

There is one very huge obvious issue:
Just because the cable fits into your device, doesn't mean that it supports it. You don't know unless you try.

That's mainly from the USB consortium being moronic, both in naming and coming up with too many optional features.

          Anonymous

No, that is from the EU.
When you force manufacturers to use one unified Connector, it is obvious that they will have to run multiple interfaces over it.

            Anonymous

Unless they specifically made their system proprietary and hostile to other systems it shouldn't be an issue. If they did, that manufacturer is moronic and isn't deserving of your money. I get USB-C suffers still from the absolute minefield of incompatible features between different cables with no markings though

            Anonymous

The EU didn't force them to use <USB-C>, they told them to all talk between THEMSELVES and decide upon a connector, ANY CONNECTOR that they will all use.

In the real world, it plays out like this:

            >plugs it in
            >device says: "oh noo, that doesn't have full support :("

            >pleb never knew wtf thunderbolt even is

False. I literally have 2 cables left in my house since everything moved to usb-c.
Actually no, I have a lightning one too because Apple are israelites and put lightning on their keyboards instead of usb-c.

And one of the 2 usbc cables is bloat but I like to keep my charger plugged in next to the bed at all times.

In reality I could do everything with a single usb-c cable.
            >charge my laptop
            >charge my phone

Then I flip the shit 180 degrees and it fricking fast charges.

Using type c for charging laptops is stupid, won't argue with that. Laptops all need different voltages and this just overcomplicates the chargers. But now imagine charging laptops over micro usb.

I haven't had a USBC crap out yet. I have had one micro get loose after about a decade of use. USB Mini seemed to get loose faster. TLDR, don't swing your device by the cable, don't stress the cable or let it dangle off supporting it's weight on the port and finally don't pull the cable out by the wire, grip the body of the plug and pull or push gently depending on what you're doing.

I had three USB-C cables break within the past year, and i am not the same anon as

I've had dozens of microUSB ported devices, and none of them function anymore. They're all sort of jittery and unstable when you try and connect them

Everything i did was to plug in and out multiple times daily.

Two out of those three caused overcurrent errors in the systemlog, so they short circuited.
The other one simply caused the typical "muh bad cable, no fast charge" error.
microUSB was much more forgiving because it didn't have those "you gotta support 100A" requirements.

Sounds like your plugs or ports were dirty. USBC starts at 5V and negotiates up to I think 48V now, not that I have anything that goes over 20V right now. My brother had a first gen one plus that the plug smoked on it due to dust. However I heard they did something moronic with that phone.

The biggest issue with USB C is that the USB consortium are a bunch of fricking morons that have foresight to the tip of their noses.
    >Be USB consortium
    >Want to build a truly universal port, that will be able to do everything
    >Design the plug. It's pretty good. Reversible, plenty of bandwidth, slim enough to put on a phone, durable
    >Need different cables to do different things. High bandwidth, high power, audio, video, etc
    >Cables will have different capabilities
    >No way of identifying what cable can do what, aside from packaging
    >No way to indicate what a port is capable of receiving
You even HAD the answer, USB 3 and 3.2 were blue and red respectively, so you knew which ones were fast when USB 3 was new.
You could have just had colour coded ports and cables, indicating different capabilities, but nope, frick the consumer, frick everyone, no rules, do whatever you like.
Someone should be set on fire for being so fricking short-sighted. Now we're in the world where all the frickwits will go "oh but the plug fits, why doesn't it work?"
And you need to start explaining cable ratings.

We standardised power sockets because we had to, we could have standized ports but we failed to.
