Why did Wayland fail to take off? It's 15 years old and only starting to gain any real traction.

Why did Wayland fail to take off? It's 15 years old and only starting to gain any real traction. Until it beats X11, there will be a new replacement ready.

anyone who has ever written a program using wayland and x knows that using wayland is like volunteering to be punched in the dick repeatedly

I watched how mpv suffered through adding Wayland support over the years. I think what you wrote is correct.

      >add feature B
      >api updated, feature B obsolete
      >remove B, update A, add C

Because the spec was too small for anyone to do anything with it for almost 10 of those years.
If it wasn't for the push back by everyone to actually make it useful then it wouldn't have happened

    >let's just make wayland seem more complicated by shoving all the different compositors together even though always run one at a time.

Wayland is a protocol. Look at the implementations of it. It's massively smaller than X11 in its wildest dreams.

It was poorly designed and clearly made by people who underestimated the scope of the problem they tried to solve.

X11 did not become this complex without a reason.

      >literally designed in the 80s
      >could be used to implement all kinds of GUI concepts that were in fashion over the decades
      >including the "modern" desktop we have now

ChromeOS adopted wayland, of course they immediately forked it to add some shit sitting in the merge pipeline for fricking years.

It's a shame Google is firing everyone and going into it's final slide into oblivion. Somellier and Venus were really starting to shape up.

Unironically because of NVIDIA and their inability to adhere to agreed standards and invent some fricking EGLStreams instead.
