He was supposedly happy in his last year year because he finally found his true love in Dora Diamant. I think I remember Max Brod saying that after he met her he gave up writing and was no longer suffered from neurosis. I think before this, his art was the thing that he clung to.

This warms my heart knowing that our guy at least had someone who truly loved and cared for him and vice versa in his last days. Still grim, but romantic love seems like something that will get you through whatever, even though I’ve never experienced it firsthand.

Can answer for cioran** but not the others. He stated if pessimists have no reason to live why would they have any to die? Also that he could never of lived with the idea of suicide- that option he truly emphasised. When people came up to him depressed and panicked he said ‘you can kill your self at any moment’ and they suddenly relaxed.

I have suicidal depression. maybe tantrum isn't the best word but you know what I mean. it always calls me down knowing I can shoot myself in the head whenever I want.

      >He stated if pessimists have no reason to live why would they have any to die?
That doesn't make any sense. They're 2 different things. You can have no reason to live, but a reason to want to have a nice day, e.g. immense pain.

If you're going to have a nice day over anything at all, you do. The rest just ruminate on it for other reasons.

The whole point of the cioran anecdote is that people who believe in suicide are optimists. I.e. you wager that there's something better than life after death. Proper pessimists don't afford themselves that comfort of thought. I think anon just related clumsily. The crux is that counter-intuitive inversion

All of those gays are mogged hard by the guy who wrote "2 arms and a head".
A cripple who was deeply and irrevocably pessimistic and who actually did commit suicide and wrote as he bled out.
Proved that all of those pessimists are nothing but cowards and if they really did hate life as much as my guy did they would just shut the frick up and do it.

The reality is that suicide is the perfectly rational response to pessimism, and what you have in these "writers" (neither cioran nor Kafka were serious philosophers) is a selection/survivorship bias or those too irrational to commit to their worldview. Those pesimissts with an shred of consistency are already dead - its only the fakes and posers still around to write books whinging about life.
