it's a loophole they made to catch Al Capone, common knowledge

kind of funny they had to resort to tax fraud technicalities to catch one the most notorious gangsters, what a madlad

It's a dumb show. Dual income with one being a teacher could EASILY pay for a house in the middle of bum frick nowhere Albuquerque.

being a high school teacher would fricking suck compared to working at sandia. it's not even close

no one is saying the show is consistent. The plot wouldn't exist without the convoluted reasoning for him needing money. He could have continued teaching until he died and his family would get the life insurance payout.

Or just suck it up like a man and take the handout from the rich guy for your families sake

One of the reasons he's selling meth is to make sure his family is left with debt. If he dies his medical bills disappear.

Life insurance won't be nearly as much as he made cooking meth. How much is life insurance for a teacher anyway? My buddies wife just had a miscarriage and the life insurance payout was 10k. Crazy to have life insurance on a fetus though.

better than nothing i guess. insurance is a massive scam anyway, even if you are in the right they will do everything in their power to deny your claim
surpised they didn't investigate if the fetus aborted itself but an unborn child being insured that's the first i hear of it

Thr money for dead fetus/baby came from national guard. It was supposed to be born soon. I assume that there was proof the baby died. I do have a friend who was telling me his theory that they somehow faked the whole thing to get the money but idk how there wouldn't be a system in check to stop something like that.

it did, he and Skylar had a house. money was just kinda tight because of Flynn's medical expenses but they could afford a humble life until the cancer, at which point Walt knew the family was fricked once he died and left them with six figures of medical debt.

he made more than enough money to let his family continue on indefinitely pretty early in the series but kept lying to himself he needed to give them more because climbing the meth production ladder was more exciting than his humdrum existence and he had been suppressing his narcissism for years to be there for his family only to suddenly find an avenue that let him be wildly successful and jack his ego off. the whole development of his character is him slowly abandoning the entire reason he started, his family, in an egotistical joyride that ultimately alienates him from his family and leaves him dead

The whole point of the show is Walt feeling inadequate as a man because he couldn't get the b***h he felt he deserved and couldn't get the CEO/inventor job he felt he deserved so he raged like a moron. That made him seek to fulfill his masculine urges through crime. It was never about the money. The cancer was an excuse to break bad.

Scientists at those big spooky national labs actually don’t make a great salary. The appeal is access to cutting edge tech and being a part of big studies. Then you can get your name on a journal, a nice resume boost, and score a high paying private sector job.

what do you call a great salary? you can make like 150-200k at sandia pretty easily

Why did he settle for being a hs teacher? We get that whole "he's a brilliant genius" shoved in our faces at every turn, was he just lazy? He could have been a university professor at the least or been a chemical engineer/whatever

      >He could have been a university professor
Always thought the same thing. Though apparently professor wages can vary wildly

The whole point was that Walt was a powerless, impotent man and had lost all ambition and motivation in life. Everything about him - the job as a high school teacher, the Pontiac Aztek, the dumb mustache and sweaters he wore, were all symbols of the fact that he had given up and been defeated.

He became a high school chemistry teacher as a short-term thing because he needed a job after quitting the start-up and getting Skylar pregnant and marrying her and having a disabled kid, and he just stuck with it out of listless inertia.

The addictive part to about becoming Heisenberg wasn't really about making millions selling meth, it was about reclaiming his power and masculinity.
