The Mac Studio is the only reasonably priced computer Apple makes anymore. It has decent desktop class performance for $2000, while you have to pay $3500 to get the same thing in one of their laptops. Nothing below the Max variant of their SoC's is worth buying because of how poor the GPU performance is. So with this Apple is saying frick you to anyone who wants to buy the only actual compelling product line they offer.

Yeah but they don't really care, desktop computing is probably a bit of an anchor for them given how much they make on phones (and laptops).

Still rocking my M1. and God its 350x faster than my old shit intel mac. Ives era macs are easily the worst laptops ever made. For them to go from worst laptop ever made to best laptop ever made in 1 model is impressive.

Now do a GPU benchmark. My 10 year old iMac with a mobile Radeon is like twice as fast as your M1.

no its not. post your model number and ill link relevant benchmarks

It's faster just in raw Metal benchmarks. When you take into account the emulation penalty for x86 games and software, it's going to probably be at least twice as fast. I refuse to upgrade my iMac until Apple offers me a computer with a GPU that's at least 4x faster than my 10 year old GPU for a reasonable price (between $2k-3k). The M3 Max fits that criteria and now they're going to make me wait another fricking year to upgrade.

            Anonymous

x86 isnt emulated, its translated. it incurs a 5-6% pentalty. theres a bunch of benmarks on this and how rosetta 2 operates. youre an idiot.
            >muh games
sorry your mac which already had no games is now worse at gaming in the one way that the only mac games that exist dont even use.

meanwhile my M native build of factorio runs my 4k SPM factorio map like butter compared to my r5 desktop.

My Mac plays 100% of the games that are actually worth playing, because nothing good has come out in the last 15 years, and everything older than that runs perfectly in Wine. But having good GPU performance isn't just about gaming. It's the principle of it that matters. Why would I pay $2000+ for a computer that has the GPU performance of a shitty low end laptop?

            Anonymous

Im sorry the made up scenario you created is upsetting you.
But my $1700 M1 Pro laptop has the GPU performance of a high end laptop. I hope one day you are able to slay those windmills.
Until then enjoy your laptop that is 350x faster than mine, or whatever you made up. Ill be playing AOE2 DE in 4k at 60fps and jacking off to my factory.

            >M1 Pro
You didn't say that before. The M1 pro GPU is twice as fast as the base M1, so it's a little bit more acceptable. But it's still not good enough for a desktop workstation computer. M3 Max is the bare minimum they should be selling "pro" desktops with in 2024, yet they're still stuck with silicon from almost 2 years ago.

            Anonymous

so you thought i was comparing everything to the m1, from an $800 laptop?
That IS a low end laptop, and yet its still faster than most any integrated GPU that came out ever that isnt a 16" power hungry behemoth. lol.

My suggestion: Go to the apple store and ask to speak with a man named Tim Cook. Tell him you really really need something faster than your 10 year old intel with a dedicated mobile radeon, and that despite even the m1 pro being faster than this, its not fast enough for you, so you simply must have a m3 pro mac pro refresh today. Its a convincing argument, and i dont see you being able to get any work done until he helps you since even what you have is slower than the m1 pro, and we know only the m3 max is sufficient for pros like you.
I hope he can get you something in the mail before you lose your job. Good luck.

The iMac was already a compromise, because they had completely abandoned the Mac Pro at the time and the iMac was the only computer with an actual desktop CPU. I want a desktop workstation Mac without all these moronic compromises like they used to make up until 2012. Back then a Mac Pro with a Xeon and upgradeable RAM, SSD, CPU, and GPU cost $2500.

That has more to do with Apple refusing to put an actual cooler on their chips because of their "muh thinness" meme. I mean one of their last Intel laptops had a small heatsink and didn't bother connecting a heat pipe to the fan. So it effectively did absolutely nothing for cooling. It was peak moron design.

        Anonymous

Not moron design, it was active sabotage to make the M1 look even better when it came time to replace intel.

I used to dream about getting a Mac Pro for film production when I was a kid; all the cool movies I'd be able to make with it. However, I do not know if they made the right decisions when designing the current ARM Mac Pros.

While I appreciate the energy efficiency Apple Silicon has, the lack of upgradability in the ARM Mac Pro is a huge setback for professional users. If you pay $7,000 for a 64GB RAM Mac Pro and then find out you need 128GB RAM for a new project, while with an x86 workstation you could just pay a small amount to buy new RAM and just click those DIMMs into the motherboard, with an ARM Mac Pro you're pretty much smoked as you would have to throw out the entire computer and buy a new one for almost $8,000. This is highly inefficient.

Not to mention you cannot use a different GPU other than the integrated one that came with your Mac Pro for *any* price. Want a Radeon Pro W7900? Too bad.

I think PC workstations have become a much better value than ever because of this.

Yeah, applel could be doing some really interesting things for the professional market but cuck their hardware or make stupid decisions

In this very specific case, it's because Apple is legitimately moving (some) of its server workloads over to m4 and is planning to release variants with high memory capacity. Apple has a big jump in terms of capability planned for the Apple Silicon units. Also m3 costs too much to make.

I really wouldn't be shocked for them to release a Mac Studio/Mac Pro every other year though just because they're niche products.

Its dumb but really it makes sense from a buisness perspective.
Theres an incredible backlog at all the fabs from the AI boom. Apple probably wants to push out M4 Pro and Max to anything and everything asap, but they are pushing it to the product that was the furthest behind and has the most customers. People will buy these ipads. Upgrading the Mac Pro and Studio Mini will have less buyers since commercial consumers likely recently upgraded to those, and most companines have a 2-3 year hardware cycle policy.
I assume if there was no backlog at fabs it would have been released all at once. But since they were forced to make a choice they made the choice that will net them the most new products sold.

Not really. It's very likely faster in single core but like 40% slower in multi core and the GPU is way slower too. My M4 is three times slower than my 4060 in Stable Diffusion. Still absolutely insane for a 8-10W chip but hardly peak-desktop performance.

So nobody will sneed when it doesn’t get updated for two or three years
Also, product launches are kind of gated by how quickly TSMC can pump out chips. If they only have a few, they can’t use them in their flagship lines like the MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air; they need to put them in things people don’t buy loads of…like iPads. Once TSMC ramps up production of their latest, less-expensive whatever-nanometer process Apple can start putting their M4 chips in things that sell in volume

        Anonymous

Hmm... I am not gonna look for any specific sales figures and such but I've understood that it's the MacBook line that is nowadays niche compared to, you know, selling iPhones. Regular iPads probably also sell vast amounts but I have no idea about the Pro line. Of course there are people like Russian oligarchs and their family members who always need the most expensive option even though they don't have any use for all / any of the flagship the features.

I hope this isn't true, the M2 SoC would be a terrible generation to freeze those computers on. The M2 has no hardware RT acceleration but the M3 and later do. The lack of hardware ray tracing accelerators in the M2's GPU puts Apple's workstation computers at a huge disadvantage for 3D rendering performance compared to current-gen PC GPUs. I wouldn't recommend them for 3D artists.

Apple likes to promote the Mac Studio and Mac Pro as feasible choices for 3D creators but I think Nvidia will wipe the floor with them with the upcoming RTX 5000 GPUs. They need an upgrade and soon.

Apple execs are morons and are relying on circular reasoning. First they fail to make a decent desktop computer and instead attempt to rely upon re-purposed laptop designs that have no expandability despite that being a hallmark of the desktop market. Then they use the lack of sales of these shit desktops to avoid making decent desktop machines. I wish Jobs was still alive so he could yell at them and turf them out the door.
