Because that's what they learned to use 15 years ago when they were getting into computers so it became the default.
Also, it's pushed/adcertised by Microsoft so normies are more aware of its existence compared to the competitors.
I personally only used it when I was learning how to use computers, but ever since then I've only used google docs and libreoffice

Microsoft might actually kill it with ms365. If everything is just a webform there's no reason not to just use markdown in github.

Because you're smarter than governments and corporations.
There, I saved everyone hundreds of posts you moving goal posts around and attention whoring to distill this down to what you really wanted: affirmation that you're the smartest person in the world and it's a tragedy that the rest of humanity doesn't recognize you for being a very smart boy. Now go take your hormone pills because we all know that's the next step for the type of person with your narcissistic personality disorder.

Most "disorders" are just not being a moronic sheep without capacity for thinking. Psychiatry and psychology are just normie roastie fake science employed by the state against its potential enemies

      Projection: the post

Some of us are just curious, and there is a solid argument to be made that such entities should be using future proof software (plain text + git) rather than some bespoke word processor

This is close, but it's actually that paid software comes with legally-binding SLAs so no one gets hurt if things break. Also no one in government gives a shit about budgets or saving money. MS could charge a million dollars per Office lisence and government would pay it.

Word comes with Excel, try rewriting that and getting every accountant to use your freetroon version

    risk aversion.
nobody got fired for choosing MS.
Even if it would save the taxpayer or company hundreds of millions of dollars who gives a frick, it's not your money.

    - MS bribes politicians and the heads of schools and universities
    - There's no personal risk for decision-makers in using MS software because they can always claim that they're "simply using the industry standard"
    - When something does go wrong, they can blame MS
    - Snowden proved that MS sends sensitive data to the NSA but politicians don't care because they're corrupt and only got into politics to collect bribes, corporations don't care about government spying so long as their data isn't leaked to competitors, and normies are braindead automatons who install Alexa surveillance microphones in their own homes.

Munich, Germany switched from MS Office and Windows to OpenOffice and Linux about two decades ago. Apart from problems with backwards compatibility for old datasets, it worked well for several years. Before the switch, Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates personally visited Munich's mayor and offered him various discounts, but he wouldn't budge.
When a new mayor (from Merkel's party) was elected though, Microsoft bribed him and the whole city switched back to Windows, paying millions of dollars in the process.

Because Gov organizations are subject to security controls, one of those security controls is basically "Anything you spend tax payer money on must have some kind of support contract so that if something goes wrong money isn't wasted on a broken product that cant be fixed"

Freeware trash doesnt come with actual support.

There are no such thing as "free". When your business operations depends on reliability, you can only have reliable engineers that are paid well and paid to service your software 24/7 be at the helm.

In real world, the cost of "free" software can incur well into hundreds of millions per day with no quick resolution

    1. boomers gonna boom
    2. its the standard so using other apps always fricks up the format/context
    3. apples pages/keynote is just as good (and "free")
    4. excel is the best beyond any other competitor and I think thats the only thing keeping m$ office going

this m$ office shit is bloat/spyware. Im more then content using apple pages/numbers/keynote (or libre/openoffice, etc) but boomers gonna boom and I cant rely on sending PDF's back and forth so that the format doesnt get all fricked up. now that office 365 is going full israelite on subscription based bullshit you'll see businesses move away from them, its just going to take a decade or two
    tl;dr
I bought this gay shit for $50 (work discount) for compatibility, I would never buy the subscription so office 2021 is going to last me for my last 25 working years

      >I bought this gay shit for $50 (work discount)
why not use some 1$ key from some keystore?

Compatibility is a big point, of course you can also edit basic documents with every other office program but try to open a word document that relies on add-ins or more complex features and it will frick up formatting.

For example in university I've used citavi literature management + Word for some term papers and my thesis. Didn't want to start learning latex or use something like like zotero if I have to be productive and get a good grade.

Having an it department fix your tardware isn't free. That's why real businesses and entities just use microsoft office.
