2FA with SMS, filling your taxes requires a browser, banking does too. You can do so on a computer but computers are also shit tier.

When you realize that a smartphone is a PDA running something as competent as what you have on your PC, it's in your pocket and you can install all kinds of software on it, you end up stuffing it with so many technical useful apps that no dumbphone with J2ME could ever come close.

That's exactly the problem. Being glued to the phone is a problem and I am trying to have single-use devices instead of the smartphone to move away from it.

Where's the "need" to go out of one's way to own what is gonna be an inferior device in the vast majority of use cases? The only advantages I can think of are that you only need to charge it like once a week (unless you're in a poor signal area in which case enjoy watching it die within 2 hours lol) and that they don't break as easily because they're not generally made of glass and are lighter than most smartphones. Maybe they physical keyboard and the form factor plays a part for some people. You can get a smartphone for the same price and it will do everything the dumbphone does and more. Also, KaiOS is dogshit.

I'd pick up a dumb phone if it had:
    modern cellular support (5g optional)
a decent camera (at least 720p 30fps OIS video, which is apparently too much to ask in a world of 480p VGA with fixed focus)
GPS with google/openstreetmap support and updates

This is my daily driver. I also used a Nokia 8110 4g for a while (the banana phone), so these are my main observations.
      Pros:
      >calling is clear and VoltE works fine, regardless of what people in this thread are saying.
      >buttons are big. I used to 8110 4g for a while, the buttons were so small that texting was a pain.
      >smooth UI (as opposed to the KaiOS phones, which had to be manually restarted due to freezing regularly)
      >Predictive text works great, any word that isn't in the dictionary can be added quickly.
      >Feels pretty sturdy. 2003 Nokia phones are miles better, but this is acceptable.
      >FM radio and microsd card for music
      >Needs to be charged about once/twice a week.

      Cons:
      >Bloatware; there are a few games on the main menu. You can play them three times, you'll have to pay over €3 to keep playing afterward, and you cannot delete them.
      >No way to make quick notes, like a grocery list.
      >too expensive. I got it for half off from an open box deal, but it retails for €70. I'd say it isn't worth more than €40.
      >Micro usb charger, don't care that much personally but I can see it's annoying.
      >I e-mailed HMD global, they don't sell spare batteries. I'd like to have a few like , but I can't. I have a Nokia BL-5c battery lying around from an old Nokia C2 and they have been reported to work. If anyone is interested, I'll try it out.

There are other cons as well, like bad viewing angles and a shit camera, but if you care about that stuff, a dumb phone might not be for you. It's not designed to spend hours on anyway, so as long as the screen is legible, I'm okay with it.

Cool, how long have you been using it? Do the headphones hold up? I've always avoided wireless earbuds due to battery degradation, personally.

Can it send texts from computer? That's the best feature that none of these modern feature phones can do, but old feature phones could and Android and iPhone does.

can you do 2FA on it with authenticator apps?

That's a no for both. I think for both, you won't be able to find any non-android/iOS offerings that support these features (for KaiOS 'dumbphones', you could sideload KaiAuth, but KaiOS is pretty slow, buggy, and inundated with Google software).

For the 2FA part, if you can't go without that but still want to commit to a dumb phone, I'd recommend getting a very cheap android phone with a good price/years of support-ratio, and leaving it at home in a drawer, without a sim-card. A Samsung Galaxy A15 will set you back €130, but will give you 5 years of security updates (so make that about 26 bucks a year for a 2FA machine for the foreseeable future). Bonus is that you can use it to log in to things like Whatsapp web to be able to contact people from your PC.

I got back to a pure dumbphone in 2019 for a year. The two things I missed most was a decent screen size for Texts (with software going along with it) and a gos map app. I lived in a medium-large city in Europe at the time where I did everything with my bike, most often than not it took me no more than 30m to go where I need to, and I kept a physical map in my bag in the rare case I found myself lost (like for a party in an outer area). It was pretty fun to be honest, adventurous even, and you get used to it rather quickly, but it was tied with my lifestyle then. I get back to smartphones when a relative give me her older one, and with COVID I get back to it's lazy inducing comfiness. I agree that nowadays it's hard to bypass a smartphone, for transport, authent app for job and banks, and whatnot. But I concur with the neo Luddite / Maria Kondo feeling of living a simpler life without all of this electro consommer bs.

A dumbphone with decent text and a jack connector and maybe minimal authent app, is really all one needs.
