Because their incentive for the last couple decades has shifted away from customer satisfaction and instead toward user retention and ads/promotion (on all services, including google search and YouTube)

I would add that because they have no meaningful competition they have no incentive to improve. It will likely get worse.

Bing is definitely a great replacement for Google. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot who does not have the knowledge or experience to make that statement. I've been using bing for 10 years on and off and for the past 6 years solid and it works just fine. Occasionally if you suspect something should show up and isn't, you can go to Google, but that's like once or twice per year, and I haven't needed to do that for 2 straight years now. So, do have a nice day, there is no reason to use Google and if Google search disappeared tomorrow the world would be fine, just like apples entire product line.

Yandex is a great alternative as well, and you do not need to be using Google anymore or any apple product whatsoever

Why is google so bad now?

+Keeping you in the echo chamber. They will try to show you results they think are relevant because of what you clicked on in the past. For example if you (unintentionally) used one website more for information than another they might show you that website over the one that has the actually useful information.

One trick to make google more useful is to add "reddit" to your search, but then again you will see results from reddit more even if you didn't. Or use duckduckgo, I kinda like that. 🙂

        >One trick to make google more useful is to add "reddit" to your search,
that won't do. last I tried their image search or the dreaded "lens" it couldn't even sauce the fricking anime or art. even saucenao/trace was better than google and even so much more nostalgic was Yandex which seemed to retain google's image search capabilities but it does it better since google regressed and can't even sauce a very nice wallpaper that I wanted a higher resolution of.
one good trick to make google more useful is no trick. you simply replace your search as yandex, and voila you can now search the web like how it was back in 2008, no fuss. you can look up the most mundanest or technical forums (whcih don't have google ads so they are removed from search results), you can look up the programs you need, you can look up torrents and keywoards that google will instead feed you with fricking garbage. even bing search is actually better now than google since I've been ttrying to look for a nice pocket wifi and it was giving me poor result, bing chat instead gave me a rundown and including the price, holy shit it was how I envisioned future, not how google envisioned it by making searching shit harder having to sift through pages of trashy results so that my time spent on their service is higher comapred to previos? dark patterns obviously but they're losing customers, I've degoogled my computer. it's all bing/yandex from here on out.

          >you can look up torrents
not to mention I wanted to download a distro (don't remember what it was) and google outright blocked the .torrent file saying it's harmful. is this why "zoomers" don't know how to even use torrents? lmao

duckduckno is fricking tracking you. it claims it isn't but it appends the fricking geolocation of your current IP to your searches so that can be used to triangulate your search history

yandex used to be able to reverse search video screenshots out of a whim with a simple right-clicking the video or even IQfy webm but now after the war, it turned to shit. the best time for Yandex was 2017-2022. RIP Yandex

welp another good stuff down. I'm guessing they're probably cutting costs which is why this feature got fricked.

that was the selling point for me to switch to yandex because they could pinpoint the exact sauce where the short clip or webm was from (hentai, porn, liveleak, fb video etc) aside from similar color codes of the shot. I'm guessing they're cut off from the google api after urine skirmish.

That was never their focus. They give shit away for free, but at the cost of abusing the customer's privacy. And never giving the customer any actual customer service or responsibility to them, like makers of paid products usually feel.

the algorithm spreads info around servers around the globe, it must get cached around if u want to access it, hence it says a quadrillion results, they're there, just not in your local cdn ur accessing

try it with languages that use weird letters, like jp or korean or something arabic. it's better when u use a vpn from there where people speak that language and search there, locally.
basically your local herd of humans is not interested in the topics ur interested in enough to have that shit locally cached 4u

I don't think caching a few hundred bytes per result matters enough to google to destroy the quality of their results.

this. the other answers sounds like people think google is a private corpo centered on profits. It is not. It is well merged with the state and is mainly a propaganda tool and information control system.

the comparison with today's google to 10 years ago is abysmal. You just have to use another search engine to see the obvious censorship ad bias.

    guess what happened:
    >rank down every website not compliant with google (aka sites without google ads, so instead of showing the most relevant result I could look up 8 years ago - now they put it on page 8 while showing the most ad-ridden site on top with popups, ad every paragraph, ad on header banner, sides, and footer of the site)
    >platform gatekeeping, company is focused more on tracking and adshit so instead of focusing on developing AI like Microsoft does (bless Microsoft) they/google instead focused on their Selfish Ledger which put humanity in a huge blackhole of "zoomer economy" who are brainwashed by the big mobile (even iPhone gets paid to put Google as its default search engine thus making it a monopoly and thus nudging the entire generation into PC-hating zoomergays who like dystopian technologies so google can push WEB DRM (web environment integrity) since google has the MAJORITY in browser market share ever since mozilla had been making more bugs and worse decisions like they can't even decide how thick the tabs should be or how tabs should look like on firefox kek!). if there's anyone to blame how zoomers don't know tech, don't know folders, don't know jackshit, that would be google. what the zoomer have on their hands? phones. iphones also use google by default! that's what happens when your gateway to internet is google, last I checked my family's google chrome it had uneditable address bar, a very unique chrome build that puts every site BEHIND a fricking "Google AMP" just last year!
    >regressed as bigtech player since they have the largest grasp on device userbase, browser, and ads, so instead of focusing on innovation they focus on shit that makes WEB DRM a thing so to gatekeep non-conforming devices out of the internet
    >first "innovation" last year was to fricking develop a war against adblockers, meanwhile huawei doing nearlink, microsoft improving AI and giving it to masses for free while rewarding them bing coins.

They haven't had to innovate in nearly a decade. Like the last cool thing they did was back when they were trying to improve Android. They've just been coasting ever since and it shows. The fact that they weren't first to market with an AI system is hilarious.

Something that I would love would be an extension that, whenever you do a search in the search bar would do a split view of Google and another search provider so you can get an immediate comparison. There are still some things that I think Google search is good with so I don't want to completely switch off right away.

    >top results are all product preview images on shirts and mugs
    >filter them
    >results are from sites that break hot links and require logins
    >filter them
    >nothing left
If it's a political meme that's an obvious joke it will be deliberately withheld to prevent misinfo. It's unusable unless you want to look at product previews and stock photos for some reason.
