It is a Balkan country. When most people say "Balkans" they mean West Balkans.
Mainland Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and the western part of Turkey is East Balkans.

This. When most foreigners use 'Balkan' it's essentially a byword for South Slavs, Albanians, and Romanians, even though Greeks, Turks, and Hungarians all share overlapping cultural aspects.
Greece also differs because it wasn't communist, and is a lot wealthier than all barring Slovenia, but Greece's richer areas area still richer than Slovenia too.

Hungary isn't counted as part of the Balkans since it's not in the Balkan peninsula.

          >Hungarians
          Wrong.

Why such a strong reaction to a weak, qualified statement like "Hungary shares overlapping cultural aspects with the Balkans?" Strikes me as Hungarian insecurity tbqh

            >Strikes me as Hungarian insecurity tbqh
Why the hell would Hungarians go out of their way to say they're not Balkan? You're being moronic, again. There are ethnic Hungarians spread out across the Balkan states, but Hungary itself is not Balkan.

Slovenia is neither poor nor a former Ottoman possession.

            >Slovenia is neither poor nor a former Ottoman possession.

            It's also not Balkan

            >It's also not Balkan
More of Slovenia falls within the Balkan peninsula than Romania does. Both are considered Balkan states.

Is Slovakia also Balkan? Poland? Germany? Maybe Denmark?

Geographically and politically it absolutely is. You cannot read through the history of the Balkans since 1800 or so without Greece repeatedly figuring in the narrative. If it feels different this is probably because it was the only Balkan nation propped up by the allies after WWII

Turkey was also propped up after WW2 to be the Southern threat to the USSR, it even received Marshall aid

Average amercanid only knows "balkans" from the fall of Yugoslavia and the subsequent freedom bombings. The greeks aren't slavic speaking (many a slavic rape DNA, tho) so the difference is accentuated there too.

However, the greeks are thoroughly eastern church, poor, and former turk subjects like the rest of the balkans.

      >many a slavic rape DNA
      this is cope
slavs were invited in greece they didn't rape anyone

What kind of cope is that? The Byzantines spent centuries at war with the Slavs to eradicate them from their former lands, plenty of dna remained due to the slavs being rapey savages

          >What kind of cope is that?
          But it's not cope
Greeks occupied the Slavs and forced them to repopulate Greek cities after the plague

They are literally considered balkan though. Maybe because Balkan is a dirty word people don't want to use it to describe the Greeks who are wealter but they are in all ways including physical Balkan.

oh, and Slovenia was never Eastern Orthodox either. If anything, it was Protestant for a while.

Most people do consider it a Balkan country, it's simply not relevant because it's not a shithole divided by religious and ethnic conflicts.
