Challenge. In the 90s the challenge was real time 3d rendering in the 2010s it was VR and now it's large scale machine learning

I don't think he ever really did very much, John Romero and Tom Hall were the gaming guys at id. Romero had to beg Carmack to join them when they worked at softdisk because he knew that Carmack was a much better programmer than him.

There are interviews where Carmack talks about not really playing their games that much compared to everyone else at the office. He didn't really "get" wolfenstein until he played the Jaguar version.

He has the same attitude to games as me I think, they can be fun and interested at times, but there's a hard cap on how excited I can get about them as a thing in themselves.

You could try hard drugs to mind warp yourself into liking them more. Maybe hire some CIA torture team to break you over and over until you love games more than anything else.

all that Unity/Unreal/Godot engine business should be his, I can't believe how much he fricked up and let that slip through his fingers

He's notoriously bad with money, or at least was in the early id days.
Also he didn't really care about developing id software or it's engines as a brand and preferred to hit the cutting edge and leave the door open for everyone else later. That's why all his engines went open source 5 years after development. Until idtech 5 which was a god damn shame. As soon as he left nu-id decided to put a stop to that. That might've matter except they still don't publicly license the engine anyway. They might as well have let it loose.

        Anonymous

did anyone ever really care about the idtech engines though? idtech4 (q3) got a lot of use, but that was about it. after that the industry bifurcated: studios that were big used their own in-house engines, and studios that were small would license an engine from a dedicated game engine developer like unreal or unity.

they've been trying (and failing) to get into hardware for a decade now. I think a competent engineer to push them would have been good for them.

        Anonymous

competent engineering isnt enough, there has to be a market for it. oculus and facebook had carmack, and it didn't do much. where is the quest? its pretty much saturated its target market. everyone who wanted a quest has a quest. and its not very many people.

doing hardware is always a crap business model unless youre apple. its expensive, risky, and low margin. trying to get a software company to do hardware is like getting a fasttrader earning $300k to switch to a $60k EE job

Valve is definitely working on AI and they have been for years, just like they've been working on BCI since at least ~2011, but in typical Valve fashion they isolate themselves in their bunkers until they have something worth showing off.

What happened with him and his marriage? He got divorced apparently.

All I can tell you for sure is that his wife claimed that he "cheated" on her and their kid via VR. She also said that he wasn't a great man, just a smart man with faults and blah blah. She was really upset at some point that he didn't come to his kids birthday party because there was going to be a bunch of kids and a crowd there and he didn't feel comfortable in that sort of social environment.
Then she deleted her twitter. This was all shortly after their divorce. Then he was with some other chick. Former army or something iirc. Who he did meet in VR playing Beat Saber iirc. So either there is some validity to those claims or--

The claims that he cheated on her in VR sound like projection to me. A defense of some sort. My guess is that she cheated on him irl, and blamed it on his absence. Iirc she actually called him an absent father at some point.
Anyway, all this is deleted text that only exists in my memory as far as I know, so you shouldn't just take my word for it.

It was on Twitter. Interactions they had corroborated that it was actually her to me.
Like I said, don't take my word for it. I'm not making anything up except for my supposition that she cheated on him and tried to justify it, and that's only because she used the term "cheated" in a fairly non standard way.
Unless there are archives out there I have no proof, and he's a fairly private guy, so you'll get nothing out of him.
