            You can't and that is the point. You lose some functionality even if it works.

    USB4 == Thunderbolt
    >bbbut USB-IF made it optional
    Every laptop is sold with Windows.
    Microsoft made it part of the license agreement that USB4 must have Thunderbolt support or it's not allowed to be called USB4, even if that would have been allowed by the USB-IF group.

    Based Microsoft is saving the day with legalese.

      it gets worse when you see all the optional features
      the only thing each spec of USB explicitly requires is a minimum speed, but even having any ability to deliver power is optional (and many cables are made that ONLY do power, no data)

      mostly true, the difference is TB4 MUST have all the features, eg 100w PD and DP alt mode (except PCIe tunneling) while USB4 only *CAN* have those features - many cables and ports labeled USB4 are missing things that every TB4 cable and pirt us guarunteed to have because the TB4 certification explicitly requires them while USB4 certification only requires 20Gbps or 40Gbps speeds and >30w PD

      this is only true for laptops; cables and other devices can be USB4 without supporting all the other stuff

        >this is only true for laptops
        Also pre-built desktops - any completed machine sold with a Windows license.
        Not applicable to motherboards, etc - as they aren't sold with a Windows license.
        Also not applicable to completed machines sold with Linux/etc or no OS.

          >any completed machine sold with a Windows license.
          not nrcessarily as some handhelds are sold with a windows license but don't comply with USB4==TB4, eg RoG ally or GPD win devices use USB4 ports without TB4 support, the new ally x has a USB4 and TB4 port side by side, but they don't have the same featureset

          but otherwise, yes, any "real" computer with an OEM license

            Those are usb 3 ports
