Yeah. People go all "muh character" until they see the bill.

This is wrong. We lost our Faustian Will just a couple generations ago. Prior to that it was the state, churches and (occasionally) benevolent rich people whomst provided funding for most all new buildings. Now businesses do, so solutions to the complex problems of architecture are never sought out, they just expediently build polymer and plywood shit for profit maximization, occasionally with a brick or stone facade.

Look at how much uglier new ranch style suburban builds or apartment complexes in America are compared to their designs just generations ago for instance. Architects are paid to design actual shit now because it's cheaper to build and moronic regulations and zoning laws only make it all worse, though they aren't the main culprits here by a long shot. Of anything regulations are too weak. There are many, many factors at play in modern ugliness but you can't possibly try to pin all of this on energy efficiency, which has become a crutch for the bugman. The mouth breather who despises beauty in his small and pathetic soul rationalizes all of this as energy efficiency. Architects don't do that, they aren't evil morons like you.

Modern HVAC is literally science fiction tier compared to what we had 80 years ago or so when this all started, we could just as easily build new structures in a style descended from Deco, Gothic, Beaux-Arts, Neoclassical or etc. and find methods to heat and cool them efficiently but the Will isn't there anymore. The west has fallen, etc...

        Dr Chud

Spengler wrote that the true form of Faustian architecture is classical music / counterpoint because it is the only high art that is in and of space itself.

Sky high heating/cooling and maintenance that's above the already high costs modern buildings have today.

Well gothic revival architecture was a thing up until the middle of the 20th century and it influenced many other styles.
But as other Anons have pointed out: comparatively expensive to manufacture and maintain, as well as a "no-nonsense" attitude in architecture. Interestingly the "nonsense" side of architecture is being embraced more by contemporary architecture.

Because those kinds of buildings are expensive, shitty and honestly not even that beautiful.

Most of Edinburgh and the New Town in particular is either Georgian or completely modern.

I more modern buildings going up around and about the place. I guess it's to disincentivise people living in such environments?

If you're going to replace something beautiful (nature) with human construction - Might aswell make it good.

    In my opinion.

But then again - perhaps the higher wisdom is that human constructs aren't meant to look good. And as such modern architecture is more a reflection of the true nature of things. It's supposed to make you miserable.

It's not about money, it's about space.

Houses still require a lot of human labor, the price of which goes up with the economy. So there are limits on how much an ordinary worker can afford, and they don't want to live like peasants or 19th century factory workers anymore, they want floor space and modern conveniences, and so do businesses and everyone else demanding real estate.

If people were fine with 2 families sharing a room, then suddenly a lot more money and resources would be invested in a smaller space, you'd have more ornate facades, people would lavish attention on their small little space. However now people just want space, they don't particularly care how they get it, whether they use modern materials and whether it looks like a glorified shipping container, so they make the trade-off.
