honestly wonder why that tard hasn't done it yet since I imagine he's in his 50s by now. he just going to let the player die when he does?

I'm sure he's annoyed about being asked to publicly release the code, but just for funsies I want to go bother him about it.

I think a couple decades ago his response to questions about open-sourcing was something along the lines of "uhh well, people will make forks and that's bad because uhh, it'll be annoying somehow, so I'll just release the source code when I can't develop it anymore!" No, seriously.

that's the normal early 2000s response

It's still it as my jukebox. Why would I use anything else? It's small, it does everything perfectly, it works with the shortcut keys on my keyboard, it doesn't data mine the music I listen to.

I never understood the hype to any music player that took up more space than needed to display the current track and people hating on winamp. It really is the perfect player for local files and there's not much you could do to improve it. I don't need to see the cover art of the track i am listening to, i don't want to read the lyrics. If i did, i could use a plugin.

That's why I suggested it, because through this plugin: https://github.com/seppd/qmmp-modern/tree/master It supports some of them. You have to use Qt5 builds, or build it with Qt5 yourself though, which is a PITA. Either way, I use qmmp on Linux, and Winamp on Windows. Perfectly happy with both.

AIMP is newer, better, has more features and is open source

      Anonymous

Are you sure it's open source?
Last i checked it was some project of a team of russian devs.
I mean i like AIMP (use it on my stone age old Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 from 2014.
I also used AIMP on my PC when i was on Windows.

      But i didn't know it's open source.

        Anonymous

AIMP can do this in their playlist. Winamp can't.
But you can configure Winamp to show the Album tag when it's written in the ID-3 tags properly and consequently.

This is why i always fill in all ID3 tagging fields for both music and radioplays.
You can also enable Winamps media library and search for certain names or phrases and everything that matches will then be listed in real time while typing.
Winamp is very versatile in this regard and you can also customize the media library fields and what type of info you want to get displayed and in what order.

Sooner or later all these music players will die due to the dev getting tired on it, getting too old or simply dying off himself.
The only way to really save them is to make them open source. But even then projects die because of lost interests in the project on the dev side.

I mean, reading the message on the website about opening up to community devs and how the entire thing was written and especially xompared to what they wrote on the website like three years ago, i think they got tired of doing the job of developing it all by themself. So if no one is taking over or really stepping in as a community dev, Winamp is dead.

I absolutely fear this scenario, since i use Winamp pretty much ever since it came out in 1997
It was the fist thing to install after every complete OS re-install and the install of drivers for the hardware.

why use winamp if I'm already using audacious with Winamp skins?

      Anonymous

Winamp is a feature-rich media player that excels in customization and extensive functionality, making it suitable for power users who enjoy tweaking their media player to fit their personal style and needs. It is, however, more resource-intensive and can be complex for users seeking simplicity.

Audacious, on the other hand, is designed for users who prefer a lightweight, fast, and straightforward media player. It offers sufficient features for most audio playback needs and maintains an efficient performance, making it ideal for users on less powerful systems or those who value simplicity and speed.

Yes, it has strong noob filters. Once you have it setup it's gold. I wish it wasn't the best - the workflow of something like ableton is arguably better for some styles. But the features of Reaper are so amazing. I wish all software was like reaper. True 90s/00s vision

          Anonymous

NTA, but you're 100% correct. I had 2 false starts with Reaper before I finally buckled down to learn it and customized parts of the UI, menus, hotkeys, mouse modifiers, SWS and some of the cool scripts users have made, etc. Once I did that, I could work quickly. It's the coolest DAW.

That said, I do most of my work with SunVox since I've been using trackers for over 20 years and really like using them. I can run SunVox on my laptop, iPad and phone and swap sketches and projects between devices. I do final mixing and mastering with Reaper though, and I do a lot of sample editing with Reaper before dumping them into SunVox.

But yeah, it sucks that Reaper's default config turns off new users who are coming from really intuitive DAWs like Ableton and whatnot.
